Honest opinions on the following girls names please?!

Or any suggestions because I have had enough of looking and trying to find something I like. Really want something pretty/cute but not massively popular :/

Ettilie (Ettie)
Pixie
Rune
Wren
Nell (Nellie?)

I love Ettie and Pixie. Nellie and Wren are ok but Rune is just Jackson's awful cousin from Gilmore Girls so would be a big No! for me.

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 08/07/2024 14:07

Pixie is not a name for an adult. I'm 53 and two stone overweight, I can't imagine trying to navigate life as literally the least Pixie-ish person in the world.

Rune I like but I'm Scottish and worry a little that it might come out as Ruin - but that's an accent thing. The other choices are lovely. Nell is one of my favourite names.

MistyHazelFox · 08/07/2024 14:07

Do you mean Ottilie or French for star?

I like Rune and Nell
What about Cecily, Noelia, Selkie, Sena or Seraphina nn Sena, Lovisa, Thisbe, Enid (it means soul) or Phyllis (it means foliage)

showersandflowers · 08/07/2024 14:08

I love them all! My only reservation would be with Pixie because I feel that's a name you really have to own... hard to tell if a newborn has that in them 😝

GiggleMugsMandy · 08/07/2024 14:12

I always thought Pixie McKenna must have had to put up with an awful lot. It’s not a very ‘take me seriously’ name for a professional, although I guess she does okay.
I just think women are still so easily dismissed/passed over and have enough to deal with without having a twee childish name to contend with.

Ottilie is nice though.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 08/07/2024 14:15

Pixie just reminds me of poor Paula Yates. Nell is quite sweet.

user1492757084 · 08/07/2024 14:19

Faerie
Beatrix - Trixie
Ellen
Wren
Scarlett
Pixie - is it too cute?
Gwenevere - Gwen
Vera
Phryne
Plum

ApolloandDaphne · 08/07/2024 14:21

Nell and Ettie are nice. The others are terrible in my opinion.

Sundaysunshine21 · 08/07/2024 14:23

Ettilie (Ettie) - fine, but looks a little bit like you like Ottilie but are trying to be different. She might have a lifetime of spelling out her name.

Pixie - this fits your pretty and cute requirements, and would be kind of adorable on a baby, but would be difficult for a lot of adults to carry off. I’d save it for a pet or use as a nickname when she’s born.

Rune - ok, not to my personal taste.

Wren - not to my personal taste, but loads of people love it so don’t go by my opinion! Point to note is that it might not date well as it’s pretty popular at the moment.

Nell (Nellie?) - feel the same as Wren.

Some ideas that I think fit your pretty and unusual vibe (based on your choices I think you like shorter names):

Etta

Briar
Remi
Olive
River
Elva
Arwen
Eden
Autumn
Belle
Aspen
Sage
Ember
Noa
Nova
Skye
Indie
Willa
Flora
Romy
Lola

Babychewtoy · 08/07/2024 14:26

The only one I like is Nell. What about:
Della
Tess
Sylvie
Hallie

IamaRevenant · 08/07/2024 14:27

No to Pixie.

I've never heard of Ettilie (only Ottilie) but I like it!

Not sure about Rune.

Nell and Wren are really pretty!

How about Rowan? My friend's amazing little girl and I love that name!

Fudgetheparrot · 08/07/2024 14:31

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 08/07/2024 14:07

Exactly what I thought for Rune!

What about Runa? Old Norse name meaning moon apparently

PortiasBiscuit · 08/07/2024 14:34

We have an Elinor, alwaysNell or Nellie.. love it.

Limth · 08/07/2024 14:34

Ettilie (Ettie) = A brand of posh tea bags you pick up for £8 from National Trust properties.

Pixie = Unless you can guarantee she'll be a 5.3 elfin beauty with a sharp wit, a cute smile and a badass individual style then, no.

Rune = Sounds like type of MDF. Or the colloquial, shortened name for the flagship gin from a small, artisanal distillery - Mothers Rune.

Wren = Kitchen manufacturer.

Nell (Nellie?) = Matronly, super strong land girl of great, but underestimated, intelligence who'll one day outsmart the local landowner resulting in him signing over his estate to Nell, who'll then promptly turn it into an animal sanctuary.

CactusMactus · 08/07/2024 14:41

I like Pixie - but maybe as a middle name.
Too many Wrens
Nel is cute. You could have a boy and call him Len.

We know a girl called 'Bertie' (must be short for something idk..) but it's so cute!
Romilly
Tessa
Kitty

HotCrossBunnyInTheOven · 08/07/2024 14:46

Haha some of these replies have made me laugh, thank you 😂

I totally agree with the views on Pixie. I can't imagine being an adult with that as a first name.

My favourite is still Ettilie. Totally not Ottilie as I really don't like that for some reason :/

Second is Nell.

Other half doesn't like Ettie and also doesn't pronounce his "t's" properly so makes it sound awful though!

It's so hard.

Thank you for the other suggestions. I shall go through them all :)

Pemba · 08/07/2024 14:47

Ettilie, did you invent this? Hmm. Heard of Etta, which is fine.

Rune, Pixie and Wren very self-consciously fey. These names don't suit a grown woman, especially 'Pixie'. Imagine also if she was ever to put on a bit too much weight, as most women do at some point in their lives, it would be ludicrous. Hardly a tiny pixie or wren.

Nell - I do really like this, though better as a short form of Helen/Helena/Eleanor, or possibly Penelope. Not Nellie though (the Elephant).

MM245 · 08/07/2024 15:07

I have never heard of Ettilie. Is it a spin on Ottilie? Never heard of it as a name and would assume it was made up to be a bit different, to be honest.

How about Elodie or Arrietty?

Pixie and Wren are both cute but they do feel a bit childish. I do really like Nell but not Nellie.

Other ideas:

Sylvie
Polly
Nella
Delphi
Primrose
Romy
Sadie
Lula
Clover
Pippa
Bonnie
Edie
Juniper

Mumofgirls2017 · 08/07/2024 15:10

Love wren. And pixie, but some sort of longer option for when she applies for jobs?
nell/nellie is ok. Prefer Runa to rune. Ettie sounds made up sorry. How about Etta or Effie? Ottilie?

bzarda · 08/07/2024 15:13

I absolutely love Wren but wasn't brave enough to use it. I really like Nell too.

Mumofgirls2017 · 08/07/2024 15:14

Suggestions

river
clover
eden
lumi
romy
elodie
cecily
nova
coralie
leonie
willa
beatrix/ trixie
joni
juniper
juno
cleo
piper

jockeywilsonsaid · 08/07/2024 15:19

I don't think Ettilie is an actual name.
Plus, if your partner doesn't pronounce his t's any name like that is probably a no-no.

I like Wren and Nell. They are fairly classic albeit more unusual classics.

SatinHeart · 08/07/2024 15:20

Ettilie (Ettie) - looks like a made-up alternative to Ottilie (which I'm not a fan of)
Pixie - bit cutesy for an adult
Rune - very 'out there' but I actually don't hate it
Wren - I really hate it, but most of MN disagrees. Is getting very popular though.
Nell (Nellie?) - Nell is nice, Nellie not so much.

I met an Ariadne recently, that's a pretty name. Also Dakota nn Coco.

MistyHazelFox · 08/07/2024 14:07

Etoile is French for star. Ettilie looks like a mis-spelling of Ottilie.

yikesanotherbooboo · 08/07/2024 15:30

I don't like the idea of saddling a child with a name that is either difficult to pronounce or spell or that is too defining.
On this basis I am not sure about Ettilie as it is likely to cause confusion and thus your DD will be explaining a lot.
Pixie is a bit silly imo and pps have described its obvious flaw.
Wren is a bit too mid 2000s ; it's sweet but if you are looking for something different I would stay away. It is sweet though.
I like Nell and all the likely long forms.
Is Rune pronounced like tune or Roo-nuh? I could like it having never seen it before.
Your names cover quite a range of styles.
