I am thinking of using this name. Could you give me your honest opinions? Is it classic? I am not Welsh, is this an issue?

I really, really like it . . . it's a lovely combination, non-problematic with spelling and pronunciation, and is lovely both for a child & a man. Also Evan isn't too common (well, not where I live in the south of England) but is known so your child won't have people constantly querying his name

Congratulations!

Gorgeous combination, really lovely

Thingsthatgo · 05/07/2024 09:19

I love it. He might get EJ as a shortening.

MonkeyPuddle · 05/07/2024 09:19

It’s lovely.
I know one Evan and he is an absolute delight.

Firsttimebabymummy · 05/07/2024 09:41

Genuinely really love this name. Congratulations

I have an Evan so I am obviously biased but it's such a lovely name! Easy for toddlers to say too when he starts socialising!

CheeseWisely · 05/07/2024 10:05

I absolutely love it and would have used Evan for our DS except DH wasn't keen. We're not Welsh either!

MrsStottlemeyer · 05/07/2024 10:16

I like Evan and I like James 😊
My only slight criticism would be that James is kind of the male equivalent of May as far as middle names go.

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 05/07/2024 10:18

Love it! I have a non-Welsh Evan too. It’s such a friendly name. Just beware, in his nursery class (south of England) there was another Evan, 2 Ethans, a Euan and a Ewan 😄

Vowel names are very popular!

Theoldwoman · 05/07/2024 10:43

I really like it.

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2024 11:11

It's nice. Is James the middle name? How does Evan Surname sound?

Evan looks like Eva, Eve etc, if that's an issue.
James is every other boy's middle name.

If your surname is Evans, it will seem very Welsh. Smile

Meadowwild · 05/07/2024 11:13

I like it, but would prefer the other way round. I love the name James and like the name Evan.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/07/2024 11:15

Evan is semi - classic imo (doesn’t feel quite as classic as similar Owen as it’s had less historical use). It’s lovely though - simple, easy to say and spell and well known outside Wales (so no, it doesn’t matter if no Welsh links).

While I love James as a first name, just be aware that as a middle name for this generation it’s very generic (the equivalent of Rose, Grace or May for girls). If you aren’t honouring a family James then I’d consider something different - maybe Joel or George if you want a similar sound or Thomas, Edward, William, Alexander etc if you want a classic like James.

KirstenBlest · 05/07/2024 11:31

I prefer James as a first name too.

Evan is a form of John, and variants tend to go in trends. Evan seems current, but Sean, Ian, Iwan etc seem dated.

It might seem dated when the Eva, Evie, Ava, Evelyn... trend is over.

There is no connection between the names Owen and Evan other than both are anglicised Welsh names.

TM1979 · 05/07/2024 11:46

It’s lovely. I love the name Evan. Ds20 has a friend called Evan and he’s smashing.
You can’t go wrong with James either. Congrats!

I'm Welsh. DF has a friend called Evan Evans.

Giving boys the same first and surname is fairly popular in Wales. I know a Thomas Thomas, a John Johns and a William Williams, as well as the aforementioned Evan Evans.

Cryingatthegym · 05/07/2024 12:11

I had a boyfriend years ago called Evan James! He was known as Jamie though.

Always thought his actual name was way nicer. It's a lovely combination.

Moreteaandchocolate · 05/07/2024 12:39

Love it!!!

RosieChardonnay · 05/07/2024 13:41

Thanks all. Our surname is not Evans and I feel it goes well with Evan.
We are picking James as a second name because we like it, would consider it as a first name but know a few baby James' lately. Do not really mind that it is a bit of a filler second name. Also feel Evan is a little more interesting than James as a first name.

I know an adult Evan and the name suits him. He's not Welsh AFAIK, and the name seemed a refreshing change from the Mark, Steve, Paul, Ian, Matt, etc of his age group.

BoleynMemories13 · 05/07/2024 19:56

Lovely name. Not overly popular but a name everyone is familiar with. Go for it 👍🏻

It’s the name Bruce Springsteen gave to his first son. So well cool in my book😀
