Baby girl name help!

I already have a DS and expecting a DD shortly.
For years, I've always loved a baby name for a girl before it became popular. Now it's one of the most popular baby names and I've talked myself out of it and tried to pick another name.
I'm now so worried that if I pick another name, I'll end up regretting it later as it wasn't something I had really thought of before and was maybe more of a replacement.
I hear people saying to avoid it as she'll be one of many but where we are I don't know another one and in our full local authority last year of like 22000 births, there were only 7?
I have no clue what to do anymore 😐

Tell us the name so we can work on alternatives?

Honestly, if you love the name go for it! I've just looked at the top ten names for girls. Olivia is number 1. I know one Olivia who is 13. Amelia is number 2. I know one Amelia who's 20.
So even if you go for the number 1 name, Olivia, it doesn't mean there'll be 5 Olivia's in the class. There might be none in the school! This is the case at our primary.

My son has a top 5 name and is the only one in his primary school - popular names account for much smaller proportions of children than when I was young and every other girl was called Sarah!

Use the name you love. What local authority are you in that has 22000 births???
It's probably nearer 2200, and assuming half are boys, there will be 7 girls with the name out of 1100, or roughly 1%

Yeah thay was a typo lol, it's probably closer to 1500 girls born last year so even then the odds are low.

2 of the other names we had shortlisted but wasn't sure of were much further down, one out with the top 100 and another like 80th and we've seen a few near us so I guess no guarantees!

At this point I've looked at so many names and threads that I don't think there is a name that I haven't seen 🤣

Thats why I avoided posting it just as that's one of the bits I ended up finding really overwhelming x

Use your favourite name.

Rldowning · 02/07/2024 10:41

If you love a name it doesn't matter if it's now become popular, just means it's a great name. If the other names you've thought of don't give you the same "That's the one" feeling, stick with what you really want.

FayCarew · 02/07/2024 11:56

Use it if you love it @FirstTimeMumma2021 . If the name is Isla, it means she'll be Isla Surname a lot, but if you picked something unusual she might find she's one of two with that name. If your surname is common, give her an unusual middle name so she's not one of 5 Isla Rose/Grace/May McDonalds or whatever.

Names are popular because lots of people like them, so it's not a bad thing.

ATribeCalledQuestion · 02/07/2024 12:01

Choose the name you love. You could choose a different, less popular name and there could still be another one in her class!
My son's name wasn't in the top 100 in the year he was born, but there were 4 in his year at secondary school! (2 others in his class!) we didn't chose it because it was uncommon but if we had I imagine I'd have been quite annoyed 😂

My kids all have names I adore, I still feel so happy when I hear their names and they are teens/adults now 😂

Choose the name you love.

Just use the name, it doesn't matter if it's popular, there were 2 girls with my name in my year at primary school- we coped!
