Sibling names that start with the same letter

We have a girl whose fairly uncommon name begins with V. It was always her name and always felt right. We’re now trying to think up boy names and we quite like one with a similar vibe but it also starts with a V! It does sound different to our daughter’s name but I’m a little put off using another V name. We can blame the Kardashians for this! Am I being daft?

@WorkCleanRepeat , don't you ever order things online?

You put your full name in the details box for online orders.

CatrionaBalfour · 20/06/2024 07:24

Please don't do this.
Children aren't kittens or a matching set.
An initial is an identifier. Allow your child to have their own initial.

WhamBamThankU · 20/06/2024 07:27

Agree with the post thing, me, my brother and dad all have the same initials!

Beefandwine · 20/06/2024 07:29

Me and my brother had the same initial growing up, it was a nightmare with the post. I hated it so much I made sure all 3 of my kids had different initials.

I wonder if we know the same family...were their names all beginning with S and did they have 4 girls? So all 6 initials were 'SS' 🤦‍♀️

Odd! It was SS but one girl, three boys.

MariaVT65 · 20/06/2024 08:13

We deliberately chose names with different initials for the very reasons mentioned by PPs.

Moreteaandchocolate · 20/06/2024 10:43

I think it’s absolutely fine! Any minor occasional issues with post will be outweighed by having the name you love most for your child :)

MerryChristmasToYou · 20/06/2024 11:01

@FangsForTheMemory , lots of things come through the post. Not everything has my full name on it. Some things have handwritten labels.

Goddessonahighway · 20/06/2024 11:06

Less of an issue as a girl and boy. So Miss/Ms or Mr will show who it's for.

PleaseletitbeSpring · 20/06/2024 11:16

My DH and his ex have both boys a name beginning with B. They didn't even give them a second name which would have helped. Their post was a mystery as to which sons was which.

MerryChristmasToYou · 20/06/2024 11:31

@Goddessonahighway , of course, we all have plenty of time to examine each envelope carefully.
Nobody ever ripped open an envelope addressed Miss M.C. To-You not realising it was for Mr M.G. To-You.

I’m aware of that, thank you.

I don't think it's a problem at all, to have sibling names that start with the same letter! I think it can be lovely. And if you have found a name that you both like, use that name!

(Some people like to have different initials for their children, for practical reasons. For example, when you write notes to them or about them - "D, can you please empty the dishwasher?", "T will have choir practice tomorrow", etc. In that case it's easier if they have different first letters. But obviously it's usually just as easy to write the whole name or a nickname.)

I’m aware of that, thank you.

Op isn't trying to match them though, it just so happens they like a name with the same first initial 🤷🏼‍♀️

At the end of the day, it's up to you what you name your child op and what you are comfortable with. People will have their opinions no matter what.

Pottyhelp · 20/06/2024 12:25

I’m an example of just one but my sibling and I have names starting with the same letter and I’ve never liked it. It sounds too matchy matchy to me and like my parents were trying to be cute. I’m in my 40s and still dislike telling people my sibling’s name. I think maybe it’s not as bad with a commonly used letter (like A or R) but with V, sorry, it just makes me cringe that people still do this. I think that’s why you’re getting comments that compare it to naming kittens.

No issues with the post, though!

SkaneTos · 20/06/2024 12:30

(One thing though, just my personal opinion.
If you have 3 or more children, and have started out giving them names that start with the same letter, please continue with the theme!

Nicholas, Nora, Nathan and Nina.

Not Nicholas, Nora, Nathan, and... Amelia)

MerryChristmasToYou · 20/06/2024 13:12

@deliwoman1 , pick a girl's name not beginning with V. When people ask why you have two children called Valerie and Vernon, you can say 'We thought Vernon was going to be Barbara but he had other ideas.'

deliwoman1 · 20/06/2024 11:58

I’m aware of that, thank you.

Really? You were considering given them the same initial, though?
Thank you.

DoYouSmokePaul · 20/06/2024 16:42

I think it’s nice. I have an aunt and uncle whose names both start with the same letter and then their two kids’s names start with a different but same letter. For example parents are Steve and Sue Brown and kids are Jenny and Joseph Brown. I’ve always thought it was cool!

ATribeCalledQuestion · 20/06/2024 16:53

I have a 19 yr old and a 16yr old whose names start with the same letter. It's literally never been an issue, not once. I think post must always come with their full names! I don't remember a time we got a letter addressed to L Surname.

Churchview · 20/06/2024 17:04

My brother and I have the same first initial.
The only problem it ever caused was when we lived in the family home and mail arrived addressed to B. Churchview we didn't know who it was for. There's so little post now that's probably not a problem any more.
