Saskia or Paloma

Hi :)

Due with a baby girl this August and struggling to decide between Saskia and Paloma…

I have always loved Saskia but many family and friends aren’t as in love with it. It’s still my favourite as looking for something less common and beautiful for a girl.

Thoughts on which to go with?

If you've always loved it you should go with it. I changed DD's name for this exact reason and it was hoohah best avoided.

IMO they're both beautiful names.

Saskia is like a stripper name. Not a fan of Paloma either.

Proves the point of not telling other people your name choices! FYI it’s an old Dutch name. Rembrandt’s wife etc.

TheCadoganArms · 16/06/2024 10:32

Sadly every Saskia I have known has been an utter twat which probably clouds my opinion of an otherwise fine name.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/06/2024 10:37

I love Saskia.

Tadpole10 · 16/06/2024 10:47

Both are fantastic names! But very different. You need to wait until she is born and see which one suits her.

For me, Saskia is delicate, beautiful is a classic way, fine featured
Paloma is angelic, soft and sweet.

However neither may suit her when she's born! We had 3 names waiting for our DD and when she was born none suited her and we had to find another.

I have only met one Saskia before and she was also known as Sacha for a nickname. I think both Paloma and Saskia are lovely

Meredusoleil · 16/06/2024 10:54

Saskia.

You do know Paloma means dove in Spanish, don't you? But unfortunately, the same word also means pigeon!

SallyWD · 16/06/2024 11:19

I much prefer Saskia. It's lovely. Paloma means pigeon - to be honest I wouldn't want to be named after a pigeon!

Sunnnybunny72 · 16/06/2024 11:37

Saskia

Thank you all for the feedback! I really appreciate it!

Paloma! That's beautiful. I know it's just taste but I find Saskia very harsh.

Well, it's not really the case. There isn't a separate word for pigeon in Spanish. But a pigeon is a big dove.

User6761 · 16/06/2024 13:06

I find Saskia hard to say and it has a harsh sound to me, but I can see on this thread that I'm in the minority.

While I don't love Paloma, I'd much much rather be called Paloma than Saskia.

But ultimately, the most important thing is you choose a name that you really like - everyone has different taste, no name is universally loved.

OK, it means dove or pigeon. Either way, I don't like the name or the meaning.

Saskia. As a few pps have said, Paloma means pigeon! 🐦

FayCarew · 16/06/2024 13:50

Saskia - pretty and elegant-sounding.
Isn't Paloma pigeon in Spanish? Seems a bit downmarket.

Obviously, I hadn't read the thread.Smile

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 16/06/2024 13:51

Paloma!

RoobarbAndMustard · 16/06/2024 13:52

@Danielle9988 Saskia is your favourite. It's your choice what to name your baby, not family or friends.
With Paloma everyone would think Paloma Faith.

Well not everyone. Paloma makes me think of the song Una Paloma Blanca...

PuttingDownRoots · 16/06/2024 14:35

Knowing that Paloma is Spanish for pigeon is a bit off putting for me. Before that I thought it quite pretty

Fontainebleau007 · 16/06/2024 15:23

Saskia

Wontletmeusemynormalname · 16/06/2024 16:05

I have a Saskia and love it just as much now as I did 17yrs ago. Only ever came across one other one which was in Germany.

Paloma just makes me think Paloma faith and I don't like her much lol

Nicebloomers · 16/06/2024 16:30

Both are lovely names. I prefer Paloma, but Saskia is really lovely.

OpenRobin · 16/06/2024 18:12

I think both names are lovely.
I'd go for the one you've always loved and ignore friends/family opinions
