Spelling and pronunciation of girl name

How would you pronounce Liana / Liyana ?

The pronunciation is Lee-ya-na, the "ana" part doesn't sound like Anna

So like Lip - Yard - Number

It's Arabic, and we just wanted to know how English people would pronounce it on first glance. Also, what spelling do you like better, Liana or Liyana? Also would love to know whether or not you like it.

TIA!

Liana, and I'd say it the same way you would.

Liyana would throw me slightly as I'd worry it was meant to be "lye-ah-nah" if I had only seen it written down.

shoopshoopdedoo · 15/06/2024 21:30

I’d say it as (I think!) you’re intending it to be pronounced.

Lee-Arr-nuh

I think it’s a lovely name and works well with your other children’s names. I prefer the Liana spelling.

Hermittrismegistus · 15/06/2024 21:30

Lee-Anna is how I'd pronounce it.

NCfor24 · 15/06/2024 21:31

We have a friend with a Liana and it is pronounced the same way you've said.

PurBal · 15/06/2024 21:31

Like you.

JacksonAverysEyes · 15/06/2024 21:31

I’d pronounce Liana as you intend. The y in the other version would confuse me.

WindowViper · 15/06/2024 21:31

I’d pronounce Liana as you intend.

Liyana I’d assume Lie - Are-Na.

Greengrapeofhome · 15/06/2024 21:32

Liana I would pronounce how you want.

liyana I would pronounce lee Anna

Lou670 · 15/06/2024 21:35

Lee arr na

TulipsAndForgetmenots · 15/06/2024 21:36

Liana is clearer. Although you've thrown me with your "Lip" - "Lee" and "Lip" don't have the same sound in them - which did you mean? If you want the sound in "Lip", then Liyana might work better (though ambiguous).

Ah I understand how that could be confusing. I read the Lee-ya and Lip-Yard in the same way, like leeyah even though I agree lee and li make different sounds.

Where's the stress?

LI-ya-na

Li-YAH-na

First is the stress on the Li, short i. Very short schwa sounds of both other syllables. Second is on the Ya. Like the name of the vine, liana, Li-AH-nah.

HAF1119 · 15/06/2024 23:40

Liana = Lee Anna
Liyana = Lie Anna

To me...

maudelovesharold · 15/06/2024 23:50

I think Liyana is the only confusing spelling, with an ‘I’ and a ‘y’. I’d probably pronounce that as Lye-Ahn-Uh.
Liana/Lyana = Lee-Ahn-Uh
Lianna = Lee-Anna

We have an Eliana (Hebrew version) and pronounced same as you except with a short "Eh" at the start.

RuthW · 16/06/2024 09:35

Definitely Liana.

Ana is always arna and anna is anna.

Jegersur · 16/06/2024 09:41

Liana, for sure. I’d pronounce it the way you suggested.

Same

Ellie1015 · 16/06/2024 09:55

I would guess Lee-anna but would be not be sure so would be listening to how parents pronounce it and correct myself.

ASighMadeOfStone · 16/06/2024 09:55

With main stress on second syllable /a:/ and secondary on first as it's also a long vowel /i:/

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 16/06/2024 10:00

Like you, I'd pronounce it 'lee-ah-nuh'. There are several students with that name in my school. The one I teach spells it 'Liyaana'. I think the others are both 'Liana'.
