Think we've finally settled for a name

So I'm 33 weeks with our second, a boy. We have a DD who's name is [Welsh] [Irish] [Irish surname], so we wanted a similar set of names for DS.

For context, we live in Wales (DH is Welsh, I'm English).

How does Osian Finan [Irish surname] sound?

beautiful

I quite like the name Finan. I don't like the name Osian so much, but it's very unusual. If you like it, go for it.

futherdaysahead · 15/06/2024 17:15

Love it!

It's a very common name here in Wales.

Pronounced Osh-an.

Well, if you like it - go for it!

Am I correct in thinking its pronounced O-sheen? It's a lovely name :)

Hatfullofwillow · 15/06/2024 17:16

As someone who had a Welsh and an Irish parent it sounds good to me.

No, you're thinking of Oisin

StumpedForIdeas · 15/06/2024 17:16

I have an Ossian! Not exactly the same but....

Be prepared for no one to be able to pronounce it.

I still love the name but DS spends his life correcting people. More than once. Especially any GP or dentist.

Caitlynandthecat · 15/06/2024 17:16

Love it!

KatyaKabanova · 15/06/2024 17:17

If it's very common then people will know how to pronounce it.

LessOfMe99 · 15/06/2024 17:17

I love Osian! It does sound quite similar to the middle name (same ending sounds) Not sure if this would bother you or not...

That's the Irish pronunciation of Osín :) The Welsh is Osh-an.

I've never heard it before so I thought it was Oss- ee- an.
It's nicer if it sounds like Ocean.

LightDrizzle · 15/06/2024 17:22

Beautiful names. Congratulations!

Moreteaandchocolate · 15/06/2024 17:25

I love Osian - great name! Osian Finan is lovely :)

KirstenBlest · 15/06/2024 17:59

Osian is very popular in Wales. It's the Welsh equivalent of Oisín.
As other have said, Osian is OSH-ann.
@KatyaKabanova , it doesn't sound like Ocean

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/06/2024 18:01

Lovely name.

KatyaKabanova · 15/06/2024 18:02

Right, Kirsten, I'm just going on how people have broken it down phonetically for me.

Echobelly · 15/06/2024 18:04

I know someone with an Osian - always thought it's a beautiful name

Borris · 15/06/2024 18:07

I'd prefer fintan as middle name as it seems to flow better

How is Ossian pronounced @StumpedForIdeas?

Shinyandnew1 · 15/06/2024 20:36

I love Finan-think that was one of the characters in The Last Kingdom!
