Honest Opinions on the name Finnick?

Hi! We are 21 Weeks with our first born son and have settled on the name Finnick. We were originally looking at Finnigan but much preferred Finnick. Really not keen on Finley and wouldn’t mind if it was shortened to Finn but want more than just Finn as his name. I know it’s a character in hunger games and we wanted a name that is really unique for him without being too weird - short backstory I went to school with a girl with the same first and last name as me and she was popular so I was deamed “unpopular xxxx” which wasn’t fun so I always said I wanted a unique name but I don’t want to push it too far and it be weird. Thanks ladies - P.S hormonal preggo here so please don’t be brutal.

It’s too close to the word “finicky” for me.

EggshellSpacesuit · 08/06/2024 07:10

I’m afraid it makes me think of “finicky”.

FuglySweaty · 08/06/2024 07:10

I just think of finicky.

Xyz1234567 · 08/06/2024 07:11

It makes me think of the word finicky, which isn't great. I don't like it, sorry.

I was thinking the same thing. I think it is better to have the same name as another child than to have a name so odd no other parents would choose it.

NicoleSkidman · 08/06/2024 07:13

Finicky.

Dojt let your own experience cloud your judgement.

No way.

DracoDormiensNumquamTittilandum · 08/06/2024 07:13

It sounds made up (is it?) and it sounds like finicky. What about fenwick? Pronounced fennick. It's a surname but at least it's a name. Will be a pronunciation headache for the poor kid forever though so maybe not.

Persianpuss · 08/06/2024 07:14

Agree it makes me think of finicky. And also the shop Fenwicks.

TowelTerror · 08/06/2024 07:14

Finicky and Fenwick’s department store.

Charlie2121 · 08/06/2024 07:14

It’s too weird. You and DS will soon get bored of having to spell it out to everyone.

UtterlyOtterly · 08/06/2024 07:14

Gently, it's not a good name. Too much like finicky as others have said.

Do you like Fergus or Fabian?

VisitationRights · 08/06/2024 07:14

It’s too much. It will be and tied to a specific pop culture reference.

MinPinSins · 08/06/2024 07:14

I don't want to be brutal, but finnick is just finicky without the Y. You may as well just cut to the chase and name the child fussy or difficult.

I actually do quite like Finnigan. I think it sounds pretty cool. However, I think if name popularity matters, you have to consider that if he chooses to go by the nickname Finn, which is reasonably likely, his peers won't necessarily care what it's short for - it will all be seen as the same name, despite his different ending.

Notsandwiches · 08/06/2024 07:15

Finnicky

FlambeJones · 08/06/2024 07:15

Unpopular xxxx is awful, poor you OP. Kids can be so mean.

I'm not keen on Finnick, it makes me think of finicky which seems negative.

What about Finton?

Gorgonemilezola · 08/06/2024 07:19

Finicky here too, sorry op, not something I would saddle a child with.

Nouvellenovel · 08/06/2024 07:21

Finbarr is an accepted Irish name.
would you consider this?

I came to suggest Finbar too. I like Finnegan. But prefer Finley/Finlay and there’s a reason that’s the most popular Finn. I do like Finnick but of course it made me think of Finicky. If you think you’d mainly call him Finn why not just name him Finn?
Or how about Flynn?

DustyLee123 · 08/06/2024 07:34

It’s just going to get shortened to Finn, and I’m not keen on it, it’s a very ‘hard’ name.

MumofSpud · 08/06/2024 07:45

What about Fintan ?

Pawtree · 08/06/2024 07:49

I know two people who have called their dog Finnick, it’s a more popular name for pets than people. Finbar or Finton maybe?
