Honest Opinions on the name Finnick?

Louloumelon · 08/06/2024 07:07

Hi! We are 21 Weeks with our first born son and have settled on the name Finnick. We were originally looking at Finnigan but much preferred Finnick. Really not keen on Finley and wouldn’t mind if it was shortened to Finn but want more than just Finn as his name. I know it’s a character in hunger games and we wanted a name that is really unique for him without being too weird - short backstory I went to school with a girl with the same first and last name as me and she was popular so I was deamed “unpopular xxxx” which wasn’t fun so I always said I wanted a unique name but I don’t want to push it too far and it be weird. Thanks ladies - P.S hormonal preggo here so please don’t be brutal.

The name conjured up an image of a remote mountain village in my head - not a person

ginasevern · 08/06/2024 13:37

Horrible, horrible name. Finnegan is so much nicer.

Hunger Games

This

FloofPaws · 08/06/2024 13:45

It's fine IMO, I prefer Fenwick and Fintan though. I don't like Finnegan

PurpleBrocadePeacock · 08/06/2024 13:55

Ironically, if you have a common surname is it also possible that there could be another Finn Jones (for example) in the classroom so you have managed both ultra-rare and likely to have a duplicate in the same name!

I like surnames as first names so Finnegan, Sullivan, Fenwick, Montgomery etc all sound good to me, but Finnick sounds like a nickname for someone who pesters you, and rolls of the tongue a bit like a Pillock.

stressedespresso · 08/06/2024 15:46

Really icky.

Nopet · 08/06/2024 15:46

Nope .

Floralnomad · 08/06/2024 15:51

I don’t like it and I’ve never read the Hunger Games so didn’t know the association . I actually also don’t see how it will solve your dilemma as it will inevitably be shortened to Finn and it’s likely that there will be another Finn .

Wafflefudge · 08/06/2024 16:15

I like it.

DiscoBeat · 08/06/2024 16:26

Finicky, it sounds like! I think it also sounds like a surname so they might have to keep correcting people. You could choose Finley Nicholas and use Finnick (and yes the auto correct changed it to Finicky!) as a nickname?

stayathomer · 08/06/2024 16:27

Finnigan and Finnick wouldn’t be for me, no

kwetu · 08/06/2024 16:30

It just conjures up the hunger games for me. So if you're a fan of that then alls good

CaptainJeanLucPicardOfTheStarshipEnterprise · 10/06/2024 02:56

Finicky Finnick. No, don’t do it.

Finnegan will always remind me of the puppet dog, Finnegan, from Mr. Dressup, which is fine, because he’s really quite lovable. But then there’s that horrible nursery rhyme:

There was a man named Michael Finnegan,
He grew whiskers on his chinnegan.
The wind came up and blew them inagain
Poor old Michael Finnegan.

So no, I wouldn’t go for that name either.

Finley or Finn is okay.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 10/06/2024 03:22

If you don't want your son to have the same name as other people in the class, you need to pick something that does not start with "Fin." Five of my friends had sons in the last year - three of them were called a "Fin-" name. It's done to death.

Adding unusual syllables to the end of the "Fin-" bit (Finbar? Finrad? Finton? Finlas?) is not going to work, because a) he'll be known as Fin anyway, and there will probably be at least one more in his class, b) after a while the Fin- names just blur into one anyway.

mathanxiety · 10/06/2024 03:32

"Finicky".

Dreadful.

Fintan
Finbar
Finn
Phineas
...all nice alternatives.

RogueFemale · 10/06/2024 03:42

Honest opinion? Finnegan NOT Finnick.

Heirian · 10/06/2024 05:59

Finnick has a pretty sad story in the hunger games.

I'd go Fennec, like a Fennec fox, cos they are so beautiful. Similar sound, prettier, less finicky.

ginandbearit · 10/06/2024 06:17

Wait till he's 16 and changes his name to Colin...then he'll have a unique name!😁

MademoiselleChanel · 10/06/2024 06:26

I prefer Fintan

Rycbar · 10/06/2024 07:02

My mind went straight to the hunger games!

Andthatwasthatshesaid · 10/06/2024 07:03

Ridiculous

🤣

VerbenaGirl · 10/06/2024 07:10

My mind jumps straight to The Hunger Games too - where lots of the names felt quite made-up. But then again, that is often how new names come into being. And I think that association with the Hunger Games will fade with time. I actually don’t mind it, and you are right - it will get shortened to Finn. It’s got me wondering how many little ones there are out there called Katniss!

GoldDuster · 10/06/2024 07:27

It's going to get shortened to Finn and he won't be the only one of those. You've strayed into trying to find a unique name and that way madness lies.

I haven't watched Hunger Games but there's another layer in that it sounds a bit Dickensian, and awkward and Finicky.

I met a baby Theon just after Game Of Thrones came out, and that blew my mind. I said, ooh Theon like Game of Thrones Theon?, she said yes, we were looking for something different and we really liked the name. That character is tragic, if I remember rightly, to the extent he got castrated. Inspirational.

Don't do it.

bookworm14 · 10/06/2024 07:40

It’s a made-up name from The Hunger Games. Please don’t do it - it’s like calling your baby Frodo or Danaerys.
