Honest Opinions on the name Finnick?

Hi! We are 21 Weeks with our first born son and have settled on the name Finnick. We were originally looking at Finnigan but much preferred Finnick. Really not keen on Finley and wouldn’t mind if it was shortened to Finn but want more than just Finn as his name. I know it’s a character in hunger games and we wanted a name that is really unique for him without being too weird - short backstory I went to school with a girl with the same first and last name as me and she was popular so I was deamed “unpopular xxxx” which wasn’t fun so I always said I wanted a unique name but I don’t want to push it too far and it be weird. Thanks ladies - P.S hormonal preggo here so please don’t be brutal.

I like the name Finnick but it's because I loved the character in the films. Realistically though it's going to remind people of the word finicky and I wouldn't use it in real life.

whyhavetheygotsomany · 08/06/2024 07:51

Made me think of finiky. What about Finley Fraser is a good name

NetMum2 · 08/06/2024 07:56

Finnegan is much better. Or how about Griffin nn Griff or Finn? Or even Flynn?

Snoopystick · 08/06/2024 08:06

Going against the grain I like it 🙂

Lindy2 · 08/06/2024 08:24

I like it.

I don't see it as too close to finicky. It will be shortened to Finn (which I also like) rather than lengthened.

I did love the Finnick character in the Hunger Games though so maybe I'm biased.

You are in the mad name zone of pregnancy. I came up with some absolute horrors at that stage. My teens are aghast at what they were nearly called.

Dont do it he will hate you. When he’s 13 he will just be Finn and probably drop the end bit.

Mojodojocasahous · 08/06/2024 08:28

He’s going to get finicky as a nickname op - that’s how kids work

Another vote for fenwick - I work with one, he very cool. Everyone calls him fen

Jennyathemall · 08/06/2024 08:31

What about “Flimflam”?

Moreteaandchocolate · 08/06/2024 08:32

Sorry op, I’m really not keen on Finnick. I love Finley, Finn, Flynn.

DogPaulAnka · 08/06/2024 08:35

I really like it but it reminds me of the Hunger games

Duckies · 08/06/2024 09:34

Not my usual taste in names but my first thought was what about Fennec? It's a type of fox. Similar sound but less finicky.

(Although a quick Google just showed me there is also a Star Wars character with the name)

Duckies · 08/06/2024 09:45

Or if you want Finn, there is Thorfinn? People may assume Viking roots though

bluedelphiniums · 08/06/2024 09:49

Another one for Finbar here. Or just Finn which is lovely.

Sago1 · 08/06/2024 09:53

Not a good name😬.

LittleMissSleepyUK · 08/06/2024 09:55

I know a Finnick, and not once have I (or mutual friends) thought finicky. He does get called Finni for short sometimes though

Firebird83 · 08/06/2024 09:57

Finicky

Sleepingonamansionroof · 08/06/2024 09:58

Is it even a name. It sounds like a made up name and every time your boy says it he will have to spell it. My husband has one of those names and it’s really annoying for him. Don’t saddle your child with a name like that. Every time you say his name people will say “pardon” and you’ll have to repeat yourself.

Sparklyhat · 08/06/2024 09:59

How about Phinn...(pronounced Finn)
Short for Phineas? (I know a baby with this name)

FishStreet · 08/06/2024 10:04

You don’t have to go really off-piste to ensure your child isn’t stuck with several others of the same name all through school. I hear you on that as I had a very common name, and there were no fewer than four of us all through primary in a class of 32. I gave DS an uncommon name, but a long-standing name, from the Bible, just not one that’s much used now.

I agree Finick says ‘Finicky’ or Hunger Games tribute’. Lots of better names include Finn. Finbar, Fintan, Phineas? I don’t like Finnegan. Don’t use other cultures’ surnames as names unless you’d be fine with calling your child Jones, Smith or Robinson.

villainousbroodmare · 08/06/2024 10:05

It's terrible, sorry.

Elphame · 08/06/2024 10:08

Honest opinion?

My first reaction on seeing this name in the list of active threads was to laugh.

Please don’t do this to your poor baby

cheezncrackers · 08/06/2024 10:08

It's awful, sounds made up and like finicky, which means fussy and so isn't a positive word. I'd choose something similar that's a proper name that people will recognise, otherwise you'll spend your lives spelling it out and explaining while people give you 'WTF?' looks.

SoupDragon · 08/06/2024 10:09

Finicky was my first thought.

WildCherryBlossom · 08/06/2024 10:12

Finn, Finnegan or Finley would be better,

Imnewtothisandnervous · 08/06/2024 10:14

Finnigan or Fenwick (I think the later is Cornish and great)
