Brother for Edward

Help! I’m 32 weeks and my husband and I still can’t come to a decision on what to name our baby boy.
He’ll have a big brother called Edward (we often call him Eddie for short).
Names we’ve mentioned are: Toby, Louie, Archie, Thomas, George, Jacob, Henry and Benjamin.
Our surname is one syllable.
Do you think any of those names go well with Edward? I’d be happy to hear other suggestions too, we’re at a real loss!

George is my favourite! (I’m biased as I have one!) I love all of your name ideas though and think they all go with Edward.

I also like Sebastian, Samuel, Alexander, Joseph, Jonathan, Arthur and Harry.

Most obvious pairing is William - I suspect there’s a lot of Edward and William sibsets out there as it sounds so classic and Kingly with a variety of nn choices (yet both are popular enough that you can’t tell age or social background). Eddie and Billy or Ed and Will just work well together.

Equally Henry, George, Alexander, Charles and James would be obvious style choices for the exact same reasons (and James in particular might sound great/really punchy with a one syllable surname- ala James Bond. Eddie and Jamie/Jimmy? (Edward and James).

But most of your choices would work well - I especially love fellow timeless classic Thomas with Edward too- like with William, I suspect there’s a lot of Thomas and Edward sibs out there (Eddie and Tommy/Ed and Tom just sound good too).

Benjamin (Benji/Ben) and Edward (Ed/Eddie) also sounds okay to me, as does Jacob - I’m just not quite as keen on them as Thomas, William, James or Alexander as all those are a bit more timeless like Edward (all have never left the Top 100).

The only ones in your list I would really hesitate on are Archie, Louie and Toby - too nickname compared to Edward imo and Archie is horribly trendy to boot. Louis is a more classic spelling than Louie at least and If you love Toby, as a nn for Tobias it would work better.

I think Edward and Thomas work well together!

MinnieMnotasinmouse · 11/06/2024 13:30

I think Frederick/Freddie would be a nice name because it has got a completely different sound to Edward but the nicknames Ed and Fred go together nicely, or if you go for Teddy, then you've got Ed and Ted.

You could also go for any boys names ending in a d, Arnold, Reginald etc. because then it's have the same ending as Edward.
Or you could go for a boys name beginning with E and start a theme that way, Elliot, Ezra, Ezekiel etc.
Hope this helps

My first thought was Peter. I love Edward by the way.

I have a friend who has a five year old Peter. It's really lovely.

Otherwise I agree with PP about Thomas, James etc. That sort of classic vibe.
