Is it a bit 'Alfie', or is it in a different league?

We are still very keen on Finlay, and I really like Theo and Louis but hubby is keen to keep it Scottish.

Oh, and what would you favour - Finlay or Archie?

Thank you again!

I really can't stand Archie or Alfie or Albie - hate all those sorts of names actually.

Theo is the nicest and not at all common - in a lots of them around sense not a chav sense IYKWIM!

madcol · 06/04/2008 19:31

Finlay definitely. Archie is short for Archibald isn't it? Scottish-wise (?) I also like Hamish and Angus.

tassisssss · 06/04/2008 19:33

Scottish boys names are great! I love Angus, Finlay, Cameron, Hamish and Calum.

pattymc · 06/04/2008 19:34

I like them all, archie is very popular around here and we know 3 so quite common as is Finlay and Louis, in fact they were all in our top 10, but we went for Tom. even more commom!

pattymc · 06/04/2008 19:35

by the way, my brother is called angus and my dad is called hamish!

MadameCh0let · 06/04/2008 20:21

I love Archie, but I think it's urban cool. I like Finley too, but I worry about the future of that name

What do you think of Seamus or Doogie or Fergus. Yes, Fergus is excellent.

What about Richie instead of Archie? Less urban cool?? WDYT??

moondog · 06/04/2008 20:23

No to all of them.

Are you Scottish?

If not, step away from Scottish names.

moondog · 06/04/2008 20:23

Doogie?
Doogie???

Please tell me you are joking?

MadameCh0let · 06/04/2008 20:24

What about Bruce? It's cool in a who would have the nerve way./

That is scottish isn't it?

TheFallenMadonna · 06/04/2008 20:25

Alastair, Alec

PerkinWarbeck · 06/04/2008 20:25

I know several archies, so do think it's becoming more popular, if that bothers you.

I like all the other names, but prefer Finn to Finlay.

gloriana · 06/04/2008 20:26

We have an Archie (Archibald) and love it! Have to say that it is a family name as my dad is Scottish but the Scottish just have such good boys names. Archie means 'very brave' so has a nice meaning as well.

Peapodlovescuddles · 06/04/2008 20:27

(Mournfully) Archie was sooooooo unusual when we named DS1 that 15 years ago

ah well maybe we started the trend

EllenJane · 06/04/2008 20:28

Why do you worry about its future??

Surley Finlay is just a regular name? It's not posh, but we don't want a posh name. My very snooty/fussy/opinionated friends (who are themselves parents, therefore know lots of children)think it's classy, and trust me, they would tell me if they were in any doubt!

Fergus is ok, but it's Irish!!

Yes, the child will be half Scottish.

I lOVE the name Finlay (we called our DS it).
We have a scottish family name so it they sound lovely together.
We shorten it to Finn and have only met a few boys with the same name-though spelt differently.
I think my DS really looks like a Finlay-have a look at profile photo.
Go for it!

MadameCh0let · 06/04/2008 20:33

Fergus isn't Irish you daft bint. Fergal is Irish!!!!!!!!

cyteen · 06/04/2008 20:33

I must say, I've never been fond of Archie...Calum, Angus and Alastair are all better Scottish boys' names to my mind (used to hate Alastair but Ali has really grown on me. Shame we could never use it ourselves due to a preponderance of Ls and Ns in our surnames).

nobodysfool · 06/04/2008 20:34

Sorry, meant to say i adore the name Archie.

MadameCh0let · 06/04/2008 20:35

Sorry that was too rude i meant it affectionately

PS a 15 yr old archie? coool. There was a man in the bank the other day called ARchie. Name badge. Really made me look twice. He must have been really unusual at school in the 70s and 80s!

I'm glad for him too!

nobodysfool · 06/04/2008 20:37

Doogie will always remind me of Doogie Howser (sp?).

FranSanDisco · 06/04/2008 20:38

DH is a Scot and liked Archie but as our surname is Scottish I said no. We live in England and I am English (of Irish heritage)so I didn't want ds to say his name and be asked "are you scottish?" all the time. I had a very recognisable Irish First name and Surname and it got a bit boring imho being asked "Are you Irish? You don't have an accent". I'm a miserable old bag though

MadameCh0let · 06/04/2008 20:38

Ellen Jane, Finley will be a girls name in 20 yrs time. I love the name. But now, knowing what I know from visiting the American board and chatting to CK Evans on US Babycenter I wouldn't give the name to a boy.

I wouldn't give it to a girl on principle though!!! It makes me sad to say good names thrown casually to the girls.
