Ez-Me
Or
Ez-May

I would pronounce Ez-Me

Maybe 'Essie' as a nickname

I love Esme, pronounced either way. Essie is a lovely nn.

Hotnamehere · 01/06/2024 21:19

Esme is lovely, No need to have a nick name. Proper nick names just evolve anyway. It's a bit naff to dictate a nick name.

Littlelillies · 01/06/2024 21:27

In English is pronounce Esme as Es-me

In French Esmé is more Es-'meh'

Littlelillies · 01/06/2024 21:27

Esmay or Esmae would be pronounced as Es-may

EffinMagicFairy · 01/06/2024 21:36

If the intention is Esme (Ez-me), be prepared for lots of mis-pronunciations Ez-May, would I choose Esme again because of this, not sure, doesn’t bother me as such, but it happens a lot. Essie has been natural progression for nick name.

BoleynMemories13 · 02/06/2024 11:07

I've known both (would assume Es-may to be honest as I know more pronounced like this but would always check first).

If you like Essie have you considered Esther as a full name? The Essie I know is Esther.

WetBandits · 02/06/2024 11:30

Ez-me. I loathe the Ez-may pronunciation.

Saintmariesleuth · 02/06/2024 11:32

I've known a handful of Esmes and have heard both pronounciations. I have followed their lead.

It's a lovely name

Pinkywoo · 02/06/2024 11:44

It's probably regional, but I've only ever heard the "es may" pronunciation in real life.

Littlelillies · 02/06/2024 11:55

How do people get Es-may from Esme?!

Even Esmé is not pronounced like that in any language

I am not keen on the name, but your choice. I would pronounce it Ez-May.

Essie is minging as a nickname IMO. No need to shorten Esme, or make a nickname out of the name at all!

Littlelillies · 02/06/2024 12:01

I'd assumed Esme is a nickname for Esmeralda!

CJ0374 · 02/06/2024 12:03

I know 2 in their 90's and both are pronounced Ez-May.

nameohnameohname · 02/06/2024 12:08

I have an Esme. Nicknames are Es, Esmerelda and Kitten!

Littlelillies · 02/06/2024 12:01

I'd assumed Esme is a nickname for Esmeralda!

It is in our family!

PuppyMonkey · 02/06/2024 12:11

I also have an Esme pronounced Me not May (I can’t stand the latter and neither can she).

Her NNs include Ez, Blisters and The Meekster - I also occasionally use Esmerelda for dramatic effect.Grin

KirstenBlest · 02/06/2024 13:52

Es-mee. I don't see the point of shortening Esme to Essie.

If you want Essie why not go for a nicer name like Estella.

PuppyMonkey · 02/06/2024 14:52

Estella isn’t nicer than Esme imho.
