Due a little sister for our half-Danish DS next month - would love some Nordic/German/similar (or names from anywhere which sound nice!) suggestions :-)

Thanks!

Our DC will be half Scandi and we've narrowed girls names down to Freya or Astrid.

We also considered Ronja but it's the name of our friend's dog, and I love Heidi but it's another friend's daughter and we wouldn't want to use her name.

timoteigirl · 01/06/2024 14:24

What names did you have on mind if Lars had been a girl?

There are so many names to pick from it can be hard without knowing anything more. Do you like short one syllable names? Do you want a classic name / old style name? Does it matter if the name is not popular in Scandinavian countries?

Alva / Annika
Bettina
Ditte
Elin / Elva
Fanny / Frida
Greta (!) / Gunilla
Harriet / Helga / Hanne
Ida / Inga / Ingela
Are names with j out as said differently here?
Kristina / Katja
Is the same initial okay? Lærke way too similar, for example? Linnea (my favourite)
Linn / Lena / Lotta / Liva
Malin / Magdalena / Maja / Malena / Malene /Merle / Mille / Mikaela / Mette / Mie
Ninni
Pernilla
Rie / Rikke
Saga / Smilla
Ulrika/ Ursula
Vivi

Maybe consider other Astrid Lindgren book character names apart from Ronja?

Thanks! Although I fear that Siri might be taken! 😅 Mette is another lovely scandi name which has been rather ruined by silicon valley!

Congratulations! 😊

We had the following list for girls (already have an "Agnes"):

Astrid
Thora
Ilse
Eira
Helga
Asta
Elfrida
Selma
Iris
Vega
Aina

I think we're going for "Thora" as it's not very common in either UK or Sweden, but people know of it. It is a true Norse name, which was apparently the most occurring female name on Viking Runes. Although I am finding it hard to let go of some of my other favourites...especially Ilse, Eira, Astrid, Helga and Elfrida <3

Best of luck!!

One of the most beautiful names in my opinion is Solveig.

Lars?!?! 🤨

Lars?!?! 🤨

One of the most popular male names in Scandinavia and would have been on our boys name list if it worked with our surname.

Lars?!?! 🤨

@EnglishBluebell

43.290 males are called Lars in Denmark. It's a common first name.

Lars?!?! 🤨

Yeah... I'm guessing you're offended by that name for some reason...? 🤣
like, SUPER common Scandinavian name, shit loads of Swedish and Danish Lars's. You've never heard of it...? That's like having never heard the name Freya 🤣
