Same name as a dog?

Husband and I thought we'd settled on a baby name for our boy due in September, only to find out that the name we love is the name of my brother's long term girlfriend's dog. (Notably, it's definitely a human sounding name that I've seen in a fair few threads recently and not a typical dog name imo)

Would you still use the name?

Pet names don't count.

I'd love to see the AIBU?. SIL stole my (fur) baby's name. Grin

The level of acquaintance is very distant between you and your brother's girlfriend's dog. And the dog will die before too long.

In short, I wouldn't allow it to affect your baby name decision. Unless it's Arlo.

Not Arlo. The potential name is Rory.

Rory is a lovely name. Go for it.

SabrinaThwaite · 30/05/2024 18:42

We gave one of our DC the same name as our cat that had died the year before.

RogueFemale · 30/05/2024 20:14

Rory is great, definitely go for it and don't worry about the distantly related dog.

caringcarer · 30/05/2024 20:43

My sister did get a bit annoyed because my DH named one of his puppies the same name as her DGD. It was because the breeder had already named the dog and it seemed to know its name so he thought he shouldn't change its name.

SkaneTos · 30/05/2024 21:36

Not a problem. Use the name!

(This kind of situation may be happening more frequently these days, since it's pretty popular now to give dogs and other animals human names.)

MonsteraMama · 30/05/2024 21:37

I've got the same name as my own dog. She came from a rescue so seemed mean to change it. It doesn't matter!

JimPansy · 30/05/2024 21:41

It's easier to have the same name. We are all Jim here.
DH is Jim. I'm Jim. DS is Jim Jr, DD is Jimima, and we have Jim the cat and Jim the dog. We have lots of personalised items.

Soubriquet · 30/05/2024 21:48

Yep.

When my dd was born, my Nan had a dog with the same name. I still used it because I loved the name and I knew the dog had another 5 years ish left of life.

My mum did the same thing…she named her baby born 6 months before my dd was born, and named him the same name as one of my nans dogs. Again, the dog wouldn’t live more than 5 ish years.

My dd and little brother are now 11 and both of the dogs have long passed on

We're both called Reba. Well, I'm Reba, she's Reeba. Pronounced the same, she just got an extra E!

Lovely name - and so cute that you share it!

crumpet · 18/06/2024 07:53

Depending on how old the dog it there will only be a few years overlap anyway, we’ll before your Ds becomes an adult

bridgetreilly · 18/06/2024 07:58

So long as you make it clear to the child that they were not named after a dog, and that they are more important to you than any dog.

JimPansy · 18/06/2024 23:35

I share the same name as all my cats. It seemed easier for us all to have the same name. We have different middle names.

Zombiemama84 · 18/06/2024 23:41

I accidentally called my puppy the same name as my cousin's daughter, didnt realise at the time. My excuse is that i work in a school so most names i like are taken by children i know.

Yellowcakestand · 18/06/2024 23:48

There are so many dogs with my sons name. I even saw it on a dog collar in a shop. I wouldn't have wished for any other name though
