Hi Mumsnet community! First time mom here and being highly indecisive. Too many beautiful names to pick from and the stakes feel high. Would love your opinion and help narrowing down the top 3. Be honest, I know names are personal and subjective :)

  1. Isabel (or Isabelle). Beautiful and charming. Does it sound good with the last name Campbell or too many ‘Bell’ sounds? Is it too common given the popularity of Isabella? I think I prefer the Isabel spelling because shorter and less likely to be called Belle/ Bella (I prefer NN Is/ Iz Issie/ Izzy).
  2. Grace - simple, elegant, timeless. I love the NN Gracie. Is it too popular? Too sweet sounding? Anyone know a spunky Grace or are they predestined to be ‘graceful’?
  3. Alice - I have always loved this name but not the obvious NNs of Allie or Al. My NN is Lissie so that is not an option imo. Anyone know other nickname options for Alice?

They’re all nice.

I think Isabelle Campbell is too many Bell sounds. It’s not unusable, but it wouldn’t be my first choice because of that.

I don’t think Alice needs a NN, most of the ones I know are just called Alice.

BoleynMemories13 · 28/05/2024 21:47

Isabel Campbell is a bit silly. I know the 'bell' at the end of Campbell is a schwa, pronounced more like 'bull' in most accents, but it's still a no from me as written down it just looks too repetitive.

Grace and Alice are both lovely. I would go for Alice, personally. I don't actually mind Allie myself but I don't actually know any Alices who shorten it. They're just Alice. Does it need shortening?

MissyB1 · 28/05/2024 21:47

Alice is lovely and classic without being too popular. Personally I find Grace a bit boring, and there are more Isabelles than you can shake at stick at.

Lighteningkip · 28/05/2024 21:51

Isobel Campbell is a wonderful singer. I'd go for it spelled the same way she does. Alice as a second choice. I'm not a fan of Grace.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 28/05/2024 21:54

I agree Isobel Campbell is too many bells.

I like Alice, I don’t think it needs a nickname and most Alice’s that I know don’t have any nicknames. I do know one known as Allie but she’s the only Alice I’ve ever known who doesn’t just go by her full name.

onanudistbeach · 28/05/2024 21:54

Alice . It's a timeless classic and not popular

PurpleReindeer2 · 28/05/2024 22:07

Grace Alice Campbell. A beautiful nsme x

Theoldwoman · 28/05/2024 22:11

All names that are in my top twenty, if not top ten!

Alice is my absolute favourite and number one!

Alice Campbell is perfect.

Grace and Isobel ( prefer this spelling) are also fantastic names. Isobel Campbell may be too much. Love the sound of Grace Campbell.

My vote is Alice Grace Campbell.

Evanna13 · 28/05/2024 22:12

Isabel is my favorite of the three.

Mumofgirls2017 · 28/05/2024 22:22

100% Alice for me! Lovely classic name. Grace has risk of being not graceful. Isobel is ok but lots of Izzy’s around. Think Alice is more classy

TheaBrandt · 28/05/2024 22:24

There are so many Isabel variants. It’s so overused sorry. Grace is ok but again so many of them and virtue names always a risk. Probably Alice if I had to pick.

Moreteaandchocolate · 28/05/2024 22:49

I have an Alice so I’m biased! She’s a teen now so at the peak age for name shortening but she still goes by Alice with no nn - it just seems to be one of those names that doesn’t get shortened.

I like Grace too, it’s not too overused. I nearly called my second daughter Grace but she’s very tall / a bit clumsy, and wouldn’t have suited it, so I’m glad I didn’t!

Isabel is so overused around us that I’ve gone off the name unfortunately, as it is lovely.

JimPansy · 28/05/2024 22:54

Alice. The other two don't flow with the surname.

Lifelikinotdothinki · 28/05/2024 22:56

Beautiful names, all three.

I like Grace best with your surname.

RogueFemale · 29/05/2024 00:34

Alice Campbell the best by far. Simple, elegant and classic.

(Loathe the name Grace).

AdaColeman · 29/05/2024 01:01

Isabell/Bella etc, there are already thousands of them. Grace had a surge in popularity and replaced Rose as the middle name of choice.

Alice is lovely, and not too popular yet, so Alice would be my choice.

LissieC · 29/05/2024 01:03

Thank you!!!

Personally I really don't like the name Isabel - probably because I went to school with an Isabel whom I wasn't keen on.
I find Alice very very plain.
But I love Grace. Beautiful name. Gracie is lovely too.

Alice is my favourite of the three, and I personally don’t think it needs a nickname or will be naturally shortened. It’s a beautiful standalone name.

Grace never made it on to my girl’s names list as my husband pointed out that it’s not pronounced in a very graceful way in his northern accent!

Isabel Campbell doesn’t seem to flow as well when spoken and I’m personally not keen on the two ‘bel’ endings.

CardiganTardigan · 29/05/2024 08:30

Grace is so overdone and every other girl’s middle name. Isabel doesn’t go with Campbell at all.

JimPansy · 29/05/2024 08:43

I don't think Alice needs a diminutive either.

Evanna13 · 29/05/2024 09:03

Not keen on Alice, I always see it as a lice and cannot unsee it anymore.

JimPansy · 29/05/2024 09:06

A lice is wrong - it's A louse. I see Louise as Lousie but I still like the name.

Won't be able to unsee that about Louise now!
I know the grammar is incorrect but Alice just makes me scratch my head.

There's so many near me and overdone IMO. Also too many bell sounds as you've said.

I just love this name.

I don't like this name. But if you do then go for it! I can't think of any other nn. The Alice I know just goes by Alice.

Clearly I like Grace / Gracie best haha
