Ada sounds like Ava which to me doesn't mean anything

Adeline is very elegant and beautiful, it has personality and history. You can also nickname to Ada but I prefer the nickname Della

CostaDelOrchard · 22/05/2024 21:31

I love Adeline, it was on my shortlist

MishkaNorushka · 22/05/2024 21:31

Ariadne

Kitkat1523 · 22/05/2024 21:51

Ada is everywhere….we have Ada, Aada and Ayda in my GDs classes ….it’s been done to death the last few years

Moreteaandchocolate · 22/05/2024 21:57

I really like both names! I would probably choose Ada myself as I love short, simple names that don’t tend to be shortened. But I know a lovely teenage Adeline, known as Addy, and it suits her brilliantly, so it’s a tough choice!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 22/05/2024 21:58

Love them both but Adeline is really beautiful!

sprigatito · 22/05/2024 21:59

Adeline is beautiful

SkaneTos · 22/05/2024 22:31

I think they are both beautiful names.

WhoppingBigBackside · 23/05/2024 21:10

Ada. i'm not keen on either of them but I don't like Adeline at all.

ButtonMoonBlanketSky · 23/05/2024 21:55

Prefer Adalind but between the two I like Adeline best.

Ada, after Ada Lovelace. My absolute heroine, she wrote first computer program and was a brilliant mathematician.

Adele is my fave

partying2 · 26/05/2024 00:04

Adeline - timeless and elegant - would have love to use it (but one of my best friends name is Adeline)

PierreElliotTrudeau · 26/05/2024 00:41

Ada is too truncated. Adeline sounds more sophisticated.

octoberfarm · 26/05/2024 03:13

Love them both but prefer the Adaline spelling - feel like it flows better into Ada as a nickname, and looks less like "Adele" which I don't love as much. If we'd had a chance to use it, we'd have used the longer form and then abbreviated. Adaline is beautiful and classic.

DramaAlpaca · 26/05/2024 03:49

Adeline on the BC, then use Ada as a diminutive. Best of both worlds then.

cocoloa · 26/05/2024 08:52

I love Adeline and we nearly used it
We were considering nickname or Addie or Della.
Also liked both pronunciations (ada-Lynne and Ada-line)

Just to add though it's having a real boom in popularity if that's important to you! I have come across loads just in passing (at the park etc)

Thank you. What part of the world are you in? I'm in North London and have never heard it here!

@mommyandmore hi, what did you go for in the end? I love Ada and Adaline myself , on my list

BoleynMemories13 · 21/08/2025 13:56

I much prefer Ada and think it works well as a stand alone name.

I've never been fussed on Adeline as it just sounds like an instruction (Add a line). I also don't see Ada as a natural short form, due to the different pronunciations of the A sound in both (a short 'ah' at the start of Adeline and a long 'ay' at the start of Ada). Addie seems a more natural shortening, in keeping with the pronunciation of Adeline.

Edit - sorry, I've just realised someone has randomly bumped this. You clearly had your baby a long time ago and are therefore no longer in need of advice! (I wish people wouldn't do that 🙄 )
