The name that we have chosen for our son?

Finlay, nickname Finn?

Just been reading other threads and people seem to really dislike it. Is it dreadful?

We know it's popular but it's not a bad name is it? Would you feel sorry for a wee boy named Finlay?

Confused, and feeling quite depressed about the whole naming thing

FrannyandZooey · 04/04/2008 18:15

it is very popular but there is NOTHING wrong with it

BrownSuga · 04/04/2008 18:15

I prefer Finn rather than the full name.

roar · 04/04/2008 18:16

I like it, particularly Finn

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 04/04/2008 18:16

Ditto what Franny says. Ignore others opinions, it's what you like that matters.

CarGirl · 04/04/2008 18:17

I like it and it's not too popular around here but popular enough that it wouldn't be wierd IYSWIM, I also prefer Finn

NotABanana · 04/04/2008 18:17

I prefer Finlay to Finn but it just my opinion and totally irrelevant.

If you are confident in the name choice, ignore everyone else.

liath · 04/04/2008 18:17

It's quite popular, I know 2 Finlays and one Finn but it's a lovely name.

I like Finn, but not Finlay. People use them interchangeably, but to my mind, Finlay is one name and Finn (two 'n's) is another name - a lovely Irish name. Finlay does seem to be very common these days, but then not everyone wants an unusual name. Do you love it? That's what matters.

Pinkchampagne · 04/04/2008 18:18

Popular name, but I like it

KaybeeandZak · 04/04/2008 18:18

Nothing wrong with it at all, do whatever you want to and ignore everyone else!

theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 04/04/2008 18:18

I like it - ignore the doubters. I can't think of a name that someone won't like!

squeaver · 04/04/2008 18:18

i like it. Was on our boys' names short-list before dd was born.

Popular in Scotland but not elsewhere IME.

Fillyjonk · 04/04/2008 18:22

the only names that most people really like are those in the top 10.

All that matters is that YOU like it

I mean, he can always change it if he hates it-it costs about £50 I think

Islamum · 04/04/2008 18:25

we gave up telling people our choices, so many were rude, finlay is nice and when hes out no one will have a bad word to say

EllenJane · 04/04/2008 18:29

The italics didn't work in the title did they.

Unsure of whether to use the two ns for the nickname or one. It is a bid random adding the extra isn't it.

I guess i'm worried that people dislike it in the same way the would dislike Jayden, Tyler and those sorts of names. It's not in the same pile is it?

He will be half Scottish by the way!

Finlay is a lovely name

Bridie3 · 04/04/2008 21:01

The Finlays I've known have been nice.

I really don't like the name at all but I certainly wouldn't be sorry for a little boy with the name - it's all about personal taste isn't it? There are a lot worse names about out there IMO.

kathryn77 · 04/04/2008 21:19

I love the name, trying to persuade DH to agree for our next one!

Think it's lovely. ds was going to be Finlay, but when he was born he just didn't look like one, so he's Max.
