The name that we have chosen for our son?

Finlay, nickname Finn?

Just been reading other threads and people seem to really dislike it. Is it dreadful?

We know it's popular but it's not a bad name is it? Would you feel sorry for a wee boy named Finlay?

Confused, and feeling quite depressed about the whole naming thing

I keep hearing people say it's Irish. It's Scottish isn't it?

I don't mind its popularity. I'm a snob too, as long as it's not seen as a naughty boy's name or a scally name, i'm happy.

i dont know a single Finn but I love the name!

LynetteScavo · 04/04/2008 21:30

I know a Fynnwin (known as Fynn)

He is an excellent person.

Love finlay/ finn/fynn

Ellbell · 04/04/2008 21:32

It's a lovely name (and I happen to know a lovely little boy by that name - but only one - so it is even nicer now by association iykwim).

BTW, my dd2 is an Ellen!

Lovely name, but very popular.

nappyaddict · 04/04/2008 21:38

i think it's both irish and scottish.

MrsMattie · 04/04/2008 21:41

Finn, Fintan, Finbar, Finian - all Irish names. Perhaps Scots too? Not sure. Finlay sounds Scottish.

EllenJane · 04/04/2008 21:45

Yes, as far as I am aware, Finlay is the only Scots Fin name, all the others are Irish. Hence us choosing Finlay.

I think it's lovely (unless like Yorkshire Pudding says your surname is Linley)

oxfordmcboing · 04/04/2008 21:53

wanted to added our little boy 14 months is a finlay...we didn't realise it was so popular..or that there was a naff cbeebies fire engine with the same name.

we think its a great name...hes 3/4 scottish...his middle name is robert so we call him fin-bob most of the time..but we will stop it before it sticks

MrsMattie · 04/04/2008 21:55

I'm giggling but in a good way@Fin-Bob. That is too cute. Bless.

LyraSilvertongue · 04/04/2008 21:55

I think it's nice. But very popular atm.

EllenJane · 04/04/2008 22:03

Hehe, Fin-Bob is very very cute. Mine will be Finlay Joseph. Fin-Jo doesn't have the same ring does it?

A question to all those with Finlays. Do you shorten it to Finn or Fin? I think it looks nicer with the extra n but maybe a little unnecessary and odd?

Sorry just lurking. Like the name Finn but Fin-Jo could have very unfortunate connotations for a teenager.

Buda · 05/04/2008 10:05

I love the name Finn. Not quite so keen on Finlay though but that is just me.

vicsta · 06/04/2008 09:35

I have become very fond of Fin in all its forms, Finlay, Finley, Finton, Finbar etc. I'd go with the one 'n' myself as I'm lazy. Contrary to your original post, I've always found the feedback on Fin to be very positive, which is almost certainly why I've grown to like it. Even if people don't its DEFINITELY not there with the Jaydens, KC's & TeeJays's. Not that there's anything wrong with them, I hasten to add, just not to my taste!

MissChief · 06/04/2008 09:39

think it's lovely. had been expectiong horrible name from yr title but pleasantly surprised ! Go with it, you like it too!

SlartyBartFast · 06/04/2008 09:40

i like them both.
increasing in popularity

Hulababy · 06/04/2008 09:42

I quite like it; like Finn too.

Personally couldn;t use it as DH doesn't like the name, and besides it is too similat to my sister's boyfriends surname (incase they get married and all that),

osyth · 06/04/2008 09:49

Ds is Finley (daft boring reason as to why we went with the e instead of a). We shorten it to Fin because we also felt that the extra n was a little random but agree it does look nicer.

We know of 2 other Finlay/Finleys, it is becoming more common but still only just made it into the top 50 so there aren't classes full of them. The odd thing about little Finns is that they all seem to look the same, when we go on holiday you can spot them a mile off! In a good way of course.

3andnomore · 06/04/2008 09:57

I like Finlay and Finn..but dh wasn't keen, especially on Finn...he always cracked a Joke about it sounding like a bodypart of a fish....

We do have a Flynn though, but that is an irish name...so, not what you would want anyway...

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 06/04/2008 12:33

I love Finlay!

FranSanDisco · 06/04/2008 12:37

Twirlymum, our ds was going to be Finlay but was named ... Max as well!! spooky

edam · 06/04/2008 12:40

It's a fine name. Of course no-one would feel sorry for him!
