The name that we have chosen for our son?

Finlay, nickname Finn?

Just been reading other threads and people seem to really dislike it. Is it dreadful?

We know it's popular but it's not a bad name is it? Would you feel sorry for a wee boy named Finlay?

Confused, and feeling quite depressed about the whole naming thing

Finn very popular but what about Flynn?

EllenJane · 06/04/2008 23:26

Connie, you have to tell me what your children are called. I do hope they're classy

Finlay is fine. A lovely curly haired moppet of one at DS2's party this pm.

Some must like it as I know a fair few.

EllenJane · 07/04/2008 09:23

Ok so out of 60 of you only one thinks it's trashy (and i'm not sure I trust her.. six Finlays and they are all chavs I think a case of exaggeration is going on there )

I'm pretty sure that if I posted the name Jayden, 59 of you would say it's trashy with one saying it's safe (you all seem quite honest from the Tyler post)

So it's safe, solid, decent, handsome and classy. Thanks to every one.

Of course they're classy names.....in my opinion, perhaps not in everybodys but thats life.

I never said chav or trashy.....they're your words. I said it was of similar ilk to names such as Jayden et al. Make of that what you will.

If you want all 60 posters to agree with you and say 'how fabulous' then don't start a post asking what people think of a name.

Really not sure why I even bothered posting in the first place - seems like you had made your mind up already and tbh I don't care what other people call their babies.

DuchessOfNorksSnowSpecial · 07/04/2008 11:03

Finlay is a lovely name and Fin/Finn a good nickname. From this thread, I see it's regarded as a popular name but the only one I know is my 17yo nephew (who's a quarter Scot).

EllenJane · 07/04/2008 11:03

"I said it was of similar ilk to names such as Jayden et al. Make of that what you will."

Well, what did you mean then if you didn't mean chav or trashy?

"If you want all 60 posters to agree with you and say 'how fabulous' then don't start a post asking what people think of a name."

What is your point here? I was just summarising on all the responses I had. I only received one bad response (yours) to my chosen name, so I am reassured.

"Really not sure why I even bothered posting in the first place - seems like you had made your mind up already and tbh I don't care what other people call their babies."

Is this because I haven't responded to your claims in the way you would have hoped?

Anyway, I don't want to have a cyber row so let's leave it alone now.

whatever

pippapot · 07/04/2008 16:46

Finlay/Finn is very much a Boden wearing, smoothie drinking, violin playing boys' name here in Muswell Hill. Just shows that names can differ from postcose to postcode. Personally I really like the name.

minouminou · 07/04/2008 16:49

not my bag, but it's a good, solid, old-fashioned name which will no doubt serve him well....go for it.

laughalot · 07/04/2008 16:50

I love that name. My little boy is called aidan and I have had comments about that before but you know what I dont care !!! Go for it its lovely.

Flubdub · 07/04/2008 16:53

It was the name me and dp chose for our ds - but then decided against it as it really doesnt go with dp's surname AT ALL! But I think its a great name (just a shame about dp's stupid name!) It always reminds me of the colour blue for some reason! Wierd, I know.
I prefer Finlay to Finn.

slinkiemalinki · 07/04/2008 17:31

if you can live with 5 years of "Finley the Fire engine" gags (doesn't help it is a very catchy tune) then it's perfectly pleasant and unobjectionable.

lemonstartree · 11/04/2008 07:51

lovely name. you choose what you want

EllenJane · 11/04/2008 11:02

Thanks for all the positive replies. I must admit, I have been really really down about it.
My DH is adamant that his name will be Finlay. I am now desperately worried about the few negative comments it received. I've even been dreaming about it... it's taking over my life!
My in-laws have reassured me a bit, they say it's as classic as say Thomas, George, James etc is down here. And seeing as we'll probably move to Scotland in the future...

My ds2 was very nearly Finlay Joseph but there seemed to suddenly be a lot of babies born locally named Finlay so he is Dylan Joseph instead.

We were stuck between the 2 so that was the deciding factor, not the only reason. Popularity nationally wouldn't bother me but knowing he'd be going to school with several children all with the same name seemed a bit much.

We had a few comments about our choice of name, Magic Roundabout obviously and also SIL said 'oh did you know there was a poet called Dylan something?' I think I may have heard of him... But stuff 'em, noone is going to like every name, its what you really like and what you think of it that matters.

MaudGonne · 03/05/2008 15:37

Surely Finley is the correct spelling? (thats if Scots Gaelic has the same grammar rules as Irish)

expatinscotland · 03/05/2008 15:39

It's a fab name.

ElizabethBeresfordSW19 · 03/05/2008 16:54

Findlay is the Scottish spelling.

There is a name Fionn (pronounced) fyunn, not Feeyon like whatshisname's wife. that blonde tory boy....... u know who i mean.

I like Findlay, Finley, but I think I have a slight preference for Fionn. I don't know any. Fintan and Finbar would be two new ways of reaching 'Finn'.

petitmaman · 03/05/2008 17:09

we gave up telling people what we were going to call dc2 (which was Findlay if she was a boy) as you are never going to please everyone and people seem to think it is ok to critisize your choices when baby isnt born yet, and then insulted if you call dc a name they didnt like. It is your decision. Findlay is lovely.

Kezza7779 · 04/05/2008 11:54

i love it its my 7 month old nephews name, they shorten it to Fin for day to day use. Its defo nat chav here - cheltenham (regency cheltenham i would like to add sweety darling)!!!!!!!!!
o and must do lunch air kiss air kiss

themoon66 · 04/05/2008 11:56

Not read whole post sorry. But in answer to your OP.. Finlay is a nice name, and sounds good shortened to Finn too.

littlepinkpixie · 04/05/2008 11:57

I think it is fine, but very popular. I agree that Finbarr or Fintan would be good.

Pen74 · 04/05/2008 16:08

Finlay is the correct spelling. Findlay and Finley are varients of Finlay. So says the Oxford Dictionary of First Names.

EllenJane · 04/05/2008 22:17

Wow, I am surprised to see that my thread has been bumped up! Perfect timing for me to announce his arrival!! Finlay Joseph arrived on April 26th weighing 7lb 11oz. He most definitely suits his name, my fair-haired warrior! He is absolutely perfect.

Thanks all :0)

Ellen & Finlay xx
