Would Joey work as a NN?

We are considering calling our baby boy Jonah, and I love the name Joey. Would this work as a NN in your opinion, or would it be more likely he would just be called Jonah or Joe?

I have considered using the name Joey by itself - I know a lot of MN users say to not put diminutives on a birth certificate but personally I’d be happy to. The only issue is that I have a work colleague with a son called Joey and I’m not sure she would be happy about it. She’s not a close friend, but is someone I would meet for a coffee and the children will know each other although not see each other often.

Don’t see why it wouldn’t work

I had Jonah picked out for the boy I never had! Nn Joey when little, Joe when older.

Jonah nn Joey is gorgeous- love it!

I really like Jonah. It's much nicer than Joey imo.

I think any name with Jo in it can be Jo and therefore Joey so that's fine. I'd imagine he'd drop to Jo or Jonah when he's older because Joey is a bit babyish. I think Jonah gives you all the options.

If you want a nickname to be used you have to make sure you introduce them as that name though, so doesn't necessarily solve your colleague problem. Presumably, she's not going to care what's on his birth certificate rather what you're calling him day to day.

Joey for Jonah is pretty intuitive imo - I don’t see how it would really be any different than for Joseph. Jo is the diminutive that gets lengthened into cutesy Joey for the nickname.

Super cute for a child due to the baby kangaroo imagery - and introduce him as Joey from day 1 and everyone should use it. But irrespective of colleagues, I’d personally put a longer version on the BC as I struggle to imagine a serious adult Joey ( who isn’t an Italian American sitcom character).

Not a fan of Joey.
First thing I think is the horrible playground insult from the 1980s.
Second thing is Friends.
Love Jonah / Joe though.

I think it would work!

I think it would work, LOVE the name Joey!

I think Jonah is a lovely name.
I also like Joe and don't mind Joey.
But nick names tend to develop once they are their own people - sometimes not even a diminutive of their full name.

I wouldn't be avoiding a name because a colleague had a child with that name.

My friend Joanne's nick name is Joey.
It's cute.
Joe is good too.

Jonah could be - Joe ,Joey, Jonie, Jo, Jone

Same for me. Jonah is much better.

I love Jonah and have only encountered one in real life (as well as one Jonas, which is also great).

On the other hand, I know what feels like several hundred Joes, Joeys and Josephs, which makes it much less appealing.

I do think Joey works fine as a nickname for Jonah, though, I just think Jonah is a much nicer name!

greglet · 22/05/2024 14:10

Tell a lie, I know two Jonahs. Still far less common than Joe(y), though!

ItsSconeNotScone · 22/05/2024 16:44

Thank you for all your comments! I’m not the biggest fan of just “Joe” so I’m hoping that doesn’t stick, but I suppose it would be out of my control really. The main reason we liked Joey was because it goes slightly better with our daughters name, although I do know siblings names don’t necessarily have to match!

I think we’ll probably end up going for Jonah. Our other options are Milo, Ezra and Arlo but I think the fact that Joey can be a NN puts Jonah slightly in the lead for me.
