Pearl or Dorothy or Flora

We've named our daughter Pearl, but after saying it for a few months it has felt a bit dusty, and I wish it was longer than one syllable. So we are considering changing it to either Dorothy (Dot, Dottie, Dory as nicknames) or Flora (Flor?).

For context, our other children are Leo, Newell, and Coco.

Would appreciate any thoughts!

I absolutely love Flora.

TrumpetOfTheMatriarchy · 17/05/2024 16:52

Pearl is beautiful. Does she have a middle name you could use?

Nicebloomers · 17/05/2024 17:01

I think Pearl is gorgeous

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/05/2024 17:02

Flora a gorgeous

Fontainebleau007 · 17/05/2024 17:03

Pearl is lovely

ShillyShallySherbet · 17/05/2024 17:05

Pearl is beautiful, my next favourite is Flora and then Dorothy. All lovely names but personally I’d stick with Pearl.

rubyslippers · 17/05/2024 17:05

Pearl is a beautiful name

GoodVibesHere · 17/05/2024 17:06

I will admit I much prefer both Flora and Dorothy to Pearl.

NotTheReal · 17/05/2024 17:29

Pearl is lovely. Dorothy just, isn’t. And Dottie is awful.

Flora is nice too.

Moreteaandchocolate · 17/05/2024 17:30

I like Flora best from your name options :)

JimPansy · 17/05/2024 17:47

I love Dorothy and Flora but Pearl goes better with the sibling names

NoOneFellOffTheirChair · 17/05/2024 17:55

Flora for me OP

Overtheatlantic · 17/05/2024 17:58

I don’t think these names aged well the first time. So they’re all a no from me.

daisypond · 17/05/2024 18:05

Flora by far.

NetMum2 · 17/05/2024 18:40

Flora makes me think of bacteria (sorry!).
I think Pearl goes best with your other children’s names, but I do really like the nickname Dotty.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 17/05/2024 18:56

Stick with Pearl, it's beautiful

MotherOfCatBoy · 17/05/2024 19:03

My grandmother was a Dorothy, known always as Dolly. She was extrovert, a great talker and smoker and dancer and a fantastic cook, brought up five children and two evacuees.
Her daughter was Dorothy, always Dot. She emigrated to NZ.
My auntie the other side of the family was Dorothy and always known by her full name.
As you can tell I like it and it’s very adaptable!
You can also use Dora or Thea or Dorrie.

WeightoftheWorld · 17/05/2024 19:13

Dorothy is a family name for us so that's my fave but Pearl is still a lovely name and given you've already named baby I would just leave it at that! Could be pearly as a nickname when very little, ime people with one syllable names often get 'ee' sound added at the end of their name as nicknames when they're very little. My DS has a one syllable name and sometimes gets that.

RogueFemale · 17/05/2024 19:28

I agree with you about the name Pearl. It ought to be nice because pearls are nice things, but it just sounds rather bland, and also naff.

(Newell's an odd choice, when a newel is a supporting post in a staircase).

PaintMyDoor · 17/05/2024 21:47

We have a 16yr old Pearl.
OP I know what you mean about the one syllable thing - it came into my mind as regretful I think when we had to call or holler her name when she was a rogue pre schooler in the park!
We got through those years and it is (imo) a beautiful name

We are using Rae because it fits with our middle naming scheme.

I have had that exact same concern! It’s just not as snappy as when i holler my other kids’ names. :)

Stick to Pearl or go back to the drawing board

Vivi0 · 17/05/2024 22:12

I love Pearl - I wouldn’t change it

Bournetilly · 17/05/2024 22:14

Dorothy is my favourite because I love the nn Dottie. Also love Flora. Pearl is my least favourite but I don’t hate it, I think Pearl matches the siblings names the most.
