For anyone else who has been waiting for the long awaited baby names data, it’s finally been released! Shame it’s still a year out of date as it is the 2022 data, but at least it’s something.

Thank you for posting this!

Finally!

PitterPatter3 · 19/05/2024 17:11

At last! I wonder how long we’ll have to wait for 2023…

So annoyed they’ve gotten rid of the feature that let you check how many of the more popular names were actually used in your own county. There seems to be such regional variation in names that it was a really useful tool 😢

All the usual tabs are still there from what I can see? You can still see the top 10 by regional area and the number one name in each individual council district. That's the same as always, is it not? I don't remember ever being able to search top 10 by individual county, just wider regions such as "North East' or 'West Midlands', but please tell me if I'm missing anything as I would find this interesting to go back and read on previous stats, if it is available.

In the 2021 data download you could definitely see the top 100 names by a more broken down area ie I could see their popularity just for my borough in London.

Which tab number was that? This is contents page for the download I have for the 2021 dataset, which only has the data Boleyn described

It was a separate excel they produced and released as part of the same data set "Number and percentage of baby girls’ names by local authority, England and Wales, 2021". Could be worth a FOI request to them? The seem to respond to all of them (even if the answers aren’t always very helpful!)

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/05/2024 11:05

@BoleynMemories13 If you click on the past summaries rather than the actual data sets for 2021, 2020 etc and scroll down to table 4 you can type in some of the most popular 100/150 or so names by area (for example there were 3 Alexander’s in my County last year). They don’t seem to have done it for this year 😢No tables comparing names by mothers age either but I don’t personally care about that 🤣
