help - girl names!

Trying to decide a name for my first baby!

I have a few boy names i like but struggling with girls names, many of my faves have been used by very close friends, and/or are mega popular at the moment (freya, florence, sienna, philippa, phoebe)

I'd like it to be outside of the top 10 names, and ideally out of the top 30.

My original top name was Lydia, but not sure about nickname lyddi, maybe libby would work?

We are a very nickname-ish family, so any name would definitely get shortened

Other names considered but not sure about:
delilah
amber - too american?
daphne (husband vetoed due to daffy)
felicity (don't like nicknames)

Is Libby for Lydia ok? Any other ideas?

Lydia is a nice name though I only know Libby as a nickname for Elizabeth so unsure if it would work?

Amber is a lovely name also :)

Moreteaandchocolate · 16/05/2024 14:38

I love Lydia! I don’t think it would need to be shortened outside your family, and inside the family then you can suggest Libby in preference to Liddy if you prefer it? Libby on its own is nice too.

Amber is lovely.

I agree about not liking the nn for Felicity. I can’t get the Tom Jones song out of my head for Delilah, but I like Lilah?

Jessica

Quartzkitchen · 16/05/2024 14:43

Lydia is lovely but it doesn't really need a diminutive. If you like Libby just use Libby

sillycucumber · 16/05/2024 14:43

I love Jessica but it's a family name already! Same with Georgina, Harriet and Holly, and Louisa, Charlotte, Sophia

I was a bit unsure about Amber as it seems to be really common in American movies - but maybe I'm overthinking it?
Could be Amber Lydia or Lydia Amber?

Does Amber have any nicknames or too short?

Would DeeDee work as a diminutive for Lydia?

sillycucumber · 16/05/2024 14:50

I'm not a fan of deedee, not sure why! but it might just turn out that way anyway

I love Lydia Amber or Amber Lydia. I don’t think Amber will be shortened, which is a nice advantage. I don’t have an association with American movies, I think it’s a lovely modern classic.

KirstenBlest · 16/05/2024 14:58

Lydia nn Lydie (pron. Liddy) is lovely.

Fizzy as a nickname for felicity is absolutely adorable.
I love Delilah from you list.

oh wow thank you so much for these amazing lists with the nicknames, im going to go through with husband tonight, some lovely ones here!

fizzy for felicity is adorable!! I love it! I was out off because of fliss/floss and flick but absolutely love fizzy! I also love Megan and Cassandra although they're quite different sounding to my other faves, a bit harder sounds but feel strong!

My DDs are Amber and Lydia! Both in their 20s now. Neither have nicknames that are short forms, instead they have ones that arose organically from their personalities.

is bambi an acceptable nickname for Amber? or is that too much of a stretch?
Or maybe Birdie / Berdie?

Hello98765 · 18/05/2024 06:10

Why are you obsessed with nicknames?
just call it whatever you want to actually call it

Whatisityoucantface · 18/05/2024 06:22

Lydia is fab and should be way more popular imo as it’s wonderful. I’ve only ever met one. For some reason I also think if the name Cecilia when I see Lydia.
If you want to shorten Amber to Bambi then you can, I wouldn’t have thought of it but I can see the link. You can nickname them as you choose and you might find you settle on one when they arrive that suits them :)

GoodVibesHere · 18/05/2024 07:18

I can't see Libby being a nickname for Lydia. How about Liberty with nn Libby.

Or the more traditional Elizabeth with nn Libby.
