I had a great aunt called Effie, short for Euphemia. Her sisters were Lisbeth (pretty sure this would have been Elizabeth on the birth certificate), Margaret and Jessie. I never asked but I think Jessie was probably the name on the birth certificate. Annie, a family name from another branch of my family, would work well.

Do you want another name ending in -ie or something different? Different initial? Nothing from Hunger Games. Not Nora.

My great aunt Effie (Euphegenia) had sisters Willhelmina (Billy) Clementine and Rhoda

KellyMaureen · 16/05/2024 15:00

Do names have to "go with" their siblings' names nowadays? I don't think my parents knew that!

I can almost guarantee it won't be any good to you, @GlowyJoey, but the brother to my great-aunts and grandmother mentioned above was Colin, a name which I think has mostly dropped out of use these days.

Another name from that generation in my family was Flora, which I've always liked. One I like less is Winnie, short for Winifred, I assume. In that case I much prefer the long version.

There's always Mary, the most popular girls' name in the English language for umpteen generations until very recently. Lovely strong name. Everybody knows how to say it and spell it. You really can't go wrong with it.

Katherine is another terrific name.

MeanLeanRunnerbean · 16/05/2024 19:35

I adore the name Effie! Almost went for Ophelia, nn Effie for DD, quite regret not going for it. Names which have a similar vibe imo:
