Love Romeo and Prescott - particularly like the nicknames that come with these names (RoRo, Romey, Rome, Scottie etc)

I also quite like Barnaby.

Only one I really dislike is Darcy because for me personally I see it as a female name rather than male. I know it’s gender neutral but I have always just seen it as feminine.

Moreteaandchocolate · 14/05/2024 18:55

My favourite is Hugo.

Some of your others are a bit too surnamey for my personal taste - I like some names that are also surnames but the ones you’ve listed are a bit too associated just as surnames not first names to me.

Do you like -

Asher
Connor
Koby
Flynn
Blake
Reid
Bryce
Bohden
Nico
Pierce
Cyrus
Declan
Dexter
Cody
Mason
Jackson
Ashton
Cyrus
Fletcher
Fraser
Miles
Harvey
Harris

ps I agree with previous comment about Darcy seeming like a girls name to me as I know so many girls with that name (and no boys)

Moveoverdarlin · 14/05/2024 18:57

I love Hugo and Barney. The rest are awful IMO. They all seem like surnames not Christian names.

SausageRoll2020 · 14/05/2024 18:58

I like Florian best, its a lovely name and it would work if you have heritage in a country where it's more widely used.

Hugo and Barnaby are really nice too.

Personally, I think the others are awful, with Prescott reminding me of the 1990's labour politician John. Rockford I'd rank last on the whole list

Floralnomad · 14/05/2024 19:00

I like Hugo , don’t like the rest .
Alternatives along the same lines Fabian , Dashiell , Levison

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 14/05/2024 19:01

I love Hugo and also really like Edison. With Edison you could also use all of the Edward nicknames.

Aglassaday · 14/05/2024 19:24

Romeo- gorgeous name, only maybe consider if in UK and doing Romeo and Juliet in secondary school, child may get bullied around that but I think bullying for names is much rarer nowadays
Florian “Ori”- not to my personal taste but love the nickname
Prescott “Scottie”- adding to my list! Absolute LOVE this
Brooks- love it
Hugo- love it
Darcy- not to my personal taste for boys but I do know a Darcy boy who is 13 and never had any issues
Foster- reminds me of foster care :(
Edison- not to my taste but still a solid name with many nicknames like Ed, Eddy, Sonny etc
Rockford “Rocky”- love it
Barnaby “Barney”- love it, how about Barney as the main name?

FayCarew · 14/05/2024 19:43

OK:
Hugo
Barnaby “Barney”Not keen:
Romeo - too 'romantic lead'
Brooks - Brook is better but a bit more like a girl's name
Florian - might get Flo/Florrie

Not ok:
Darcy - more like a girl's name
Foster - foster child
Edison - lightbulb moment?
Prescott - 2 Jags
Rockford - Files

Bad nicknames:
Rockford “Rocky”
Florian “Ori”Prescott “Scottie”

NetMum2 · 14/05/2024 20:31

Romeo - wherefore art thou?
Florian “Ori” - ok, I like the name Orion too
Prescott “Scottie” - I prefer Scott nn Scottie
Brooks - I know this as a surname
Hugo - ok
Darcy - I only know Darcy/Darcey/Darcie as a popular girls name
Foster - this is a surname?
Edison - this is a surname too?
Rockford “Rocky” - a surname? Also sounds like a place. I prefer Rocco nn Rocky
Barnaby “Barney” - a ‘barney’ is a row/argument

Like:
Florian or Orion nn Ori
Scott nn Scottie
Rocco nn Rocky
Hugo

Mumofgirls2017 · 14/05/2024 22:06

Florian “Ori” - bit too flowery
Prescott “Scottie” - John Prescott 😬😂
Brooks - ok, meh
Hugo - unsure why but really dislike
Darcy - prefer for girl
Foster - beer
Edison - ok, bit American
Rockford “Rocky” - love!
Barnaby “Barney” - not a fan but many are

Riverlee · 14/05/2024 22:13

Romeo - not keen, big name to live up to
Florian “Ori”- quite like
Prescott “Scottie” - not keen on surname first names,
Brook - Brooke is a girls name
Hugo - quite like
Darcy - quite like, but can also be used as girls name
Foster - same as Prescott
Edison - not sure
Rockford “Rocky” - another surname
Barnaby “Barney” - like

other names
Oakley
Tristan
Tobias
Seth
Kai
Corey

NewName24 · 14/05/2024 22:14

Not my taste at all.
I really don't like surnames being used for first names.
If I had to choose one from the list, then I'd choose Hugo, but none of the others.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/05/2024 22:54

As surnames for first names go (bearing in mind they are not my usual taste) , I think Edison is quite good- a great famous namesake in the inventor and Edison can use all the usual nn’s for the more popular Ed- names (Ed, Ned, Ted etc) if he’s not keen. A similar style name might be Bennett (Ben)?

I adore Ori - but would either use it as a full name in its own right ( it is in Hebrew - as is similar Orry in Manx) or as a nn for Oliver, Orin or Orlando, as I personally find Florian a bit too feminine sounding if you are in the UK.

I also like Barnaby, though I personally find nn Barney a bit cartoon character.

Hugo is a bit blah to me but inoffensive enough - much prefer classic and less popular Hugh though.

While Romeo sounds nice, he will have to put up with jokes all his life since it’s not as well used as Juliet.

Really dislike your other choices - Darcy will be all girl now to most people (despite P and P) and the other surnames as first names are pretty awful imo, sorry.

DramaAlpaca · 14/05/2024 22:54

It's rare that I can't find a name I like on a list, but I'm struggling here. I guess we don't have the same taste.

I'd pick Edison if I had to choose one.

user1492757084 · 15/05/2024 09:58

Favourites ..
Edison
Scott - short, smart
Sandford
Griffin
Barney -it's better than Barnaby
Barry - dignified, no need for a nick name though Baz is manly.
Hugh
Darcy

MiddleAgedDread · 15/05/2024 11:58

Not to my taste but Barnaby and Hugo are ok at a push.

Theoldwoman · 15/05/2024 14:12

Hugo is the only one I like.

Evan
Torin
Ayrton
Fox
Gage
Otto
Rufus
Cosmo
Felix
Trey

RogueFemale · 18/05/2024 01:34

Romeo - Beckham / chavvy
Florian “Ori” - like Florian, hate the nn
Prescott “Scottie” - John Prescott
Brooks - Brook Shields
Hugo - Tory MP (e.g. Hugo Swire)
Darcy - Bussell
Foster - foster child
Edison - screw-in lightbulb
Rockford “Rocky” - chavvy nn
Barnaby “Barney” - a man in dungarees chewing straw

thefarrierswife · 23/05/2024 14:59

Love Barney on it's own

mathanxiety · 23/05/2024 18:22

Romeo - nice for a dog/ cat/ gerbil.
Florian - lovely, but the nn "Ori" is a bit contrived.
Prescott - makes me think of GHW and GW Bush and New England WASPs in general.
Brooks - Brooks Brothers is a gents outfitters in the US. As a name it's an outdated 80s/90s one.
Hugo - great name.
Darcy - more a girl's name than a boy's. Also has 'arse' in the middle.
Foster - "ale"; not great. He'd be called Fester in school.
Edison - not bad.
Rockford - a crime-ridden, down-at-heel town about an hour from where I live; also "The Rockford Files" from TV long ago.
Barnaby - great name.

Florian
Hugo
Barnaby
are nice.

Plus Edison at a pinch.
