Hi all,

I really love the name Alexa nn Lexie. My husband has vetoed it based on links to the Amazon Alexa - I thought he was being ridiculous but then I saw a MN AIBU thread where many people were in agreement, which made me think twice too.

I'm really struggling with names, so I'm coming back to Lexie, and thinking about what other names I could use which would have the nn Lexie - eg Alexis or Alexia. Are there any others?

Are Alexis/Alexia too close to Alexa and thus Amazon?

Alexandra?

I wouldn't use them. How about just using Lexie if you like that name?

I quite like Alexandrina at the minute Wink

Alexandra is my personal favourite- Lexi is a lovely short version for that and you have the bonus of the lovely classy, timeless full name if she ever wanted it in the future.

Nicebloomers · 12/05/2024 15:09

if you go for Alexandra you can use Lexie and even Alexa if the technology becomes obsolete in the coming years. Tbh I’d use Alexa anyway if I really loved it. Loads of perfectly fine names are used for other things.

Alexis is traditionally a man's name but now unisex. I like it but it does make me think of Dynasty.
Alexia is a condition.

I' d use Alexandra and choose whatever diminutive you like.

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 12/05/2024 15:50

Alex?

For a moment I thought it was going to be Amazon (first name) Alexa (middle name).

I would go with Alexandra too using Lexi as a nickname.

MalibuBarbieDreamHouse · 12/05/2024 15:53

i know an Alexandra who goes by Lexi

DaisyHaites · 12/05/2024 15:54

There are quite a few articles by Alexas who have what Amazon has done to their name and have a lifetime of jokes about it. I wouldn’t want to burden my child with that.

I think Alexis is fine as is Alexandra or Alexandria

timoteigirl · 12/05/2024 17:12

Isis name has been ruined too but things may be different by the time your daughter is an adult.

I also like Alessia and Alexandria.

Alexa is a big no for me. I taught one years back, before the device became popular, and it was fine back then but I hear she solely goes by Lexi now and I don't blame her. I taught another just a few years ago, who would have been named a long time after the device became mainstream, and I wonder what her parents were thinking. Maybe they had hoped it wouldn't be an issue but, even at the young age of 4, the poor girl spent all day with her peers going 'hey Alexa'. Kids can't help themselves. Your daughter will not thank you for this! It's no coincidence that registrations of girls called Alexa dropped off dramatically after Amazon used the name.

However, I have since taught an Alexis and young children don't seem to make the connection with how similar they are. So Alexis could work for you.

Lexi is fine as a stand alone name though, if you only ever intend to call her that. Personally I find Alexandra a bit of a mouthful for a young girl, although it's lovely and traditional. Most Alexandras seem to go by Alex rather than Lexi in my experience.

You can give your Alexa another name!

I know one Alexa, aged 11 (so probably just before they became a 'thing', I'm not sure). I don't actually think she gets teased and she never shortens her name. But then she's been with the same kids since she was little so maybe it would be different if she was a new girl somewhere.

I like the name and it's not like an Amazon Alexa is some awful thing. I don't think the name's unusuable.

goldenretrievermum5 · 14/05/2024 02:00

I absolutely adore Alexa, Alexia was on my list for DD but unfortunately I really don’t think I could bring myself to use either nowadays due to the Amazon thing - sorry OP! Just wouldn’t be fair to risk her being made fun of or even having to contend with constantly triggering the increasingly common range of Amazon home devices, I can’t see the issue going away any time soon. It’s such a shame as they’re both such gorgeous names, even the Dutch royal family has a Princess Alexia

merrymelodies · 14/05/2024 02:07

My name's Alexandra but everyone calls me Alex.
