How many Ezra’s do you know?

Interested to know how popular Ezra is, and seen as the ONS data seems like it’s never going to be updated I thought I’d turn to MN!

I know it was top 100 in the latest data (2021) but interested to know if it’s continued climbing since then. How many Ezras do you know, how old and if you’re happy to say - what area in the UK are you from?

One in DD’s class and he’s awesome!

Crackery · 10/05/2024 21:24

Two in the primary school I work in. Both under 8yrs. Lovely name!

twentysevendresses · 10/05/2024 21:26

Been teaching for 30 years and have never taught an Ezra...I only know one and he's a toddler who lives down the road. Nice name 👌🏻

One. Plurals don't require apostrophes though. Ezras.

Doghairdoishare · 10/05/2024 21:34

3 aged 10, 3 and a baby

I’m aware, unfortunately realised when it was too late…hoped the grammar police wouldn’t notice 🤦🏻‍♀️

One, aged 7. Gorgeous little thing.

kezzykicks · 11/05/2024 07:48

3 but I know a lot of churchy people where it is very popular, I feel like I heard it a lot a few years ago and not so much now. Lovely name.

I know it really wouldn’t be the end of the world and probably silly even thinking about it - it’s not something in my control!

I just remember my best friend in school being one of four charlottes in our class and her hating it, so it’s always something I’ve thought about.

This is much less likely to happen now, even with the most popular names. E.g. Olivia, the most popular girls name, was used 3649 in 2021, that’s only 0.6% of babies born.
20/30 plus years ago, popular names would have been used a lot lot more. Eg in 98, Chloe was the most popular girls name and was used 9628 times, 1.5% of babies born. It would have been higher numbers in the 80’s.
My dc has one Oliver in their reception class, no other top 10 names. You will get pockets of course (there are 3 boys in the year with a name outside top 50), but you can’t predict that!

I'm guessing it's a name that's massively shooting up the naming charts. Literally had never met an Ezra in my life and then met three very young Ezras in quick succession. Two are about 2 years old and the other isn't quite 1.

it does seem to be shooting up! I personally only know of one who will be around 30, but I’ve seen it come up on here a few times as a popular name.

There's 2 in DDs nursery.

BoleynMemories13 · 11/05/2024 12:02

I know one male and one female of primary school age, one male toddler and one male newborn.

I expect it will have risen since 2021, as biblical names are a current trend, but days of 3 or more kids in the same class with the same name are all but gone as parents pick from such a huge pool of names these days. So I really wouldn't lose much sleep on how popular it is as the stats really don't mean much in terms of duplication any more. Any name could be duplicated but statistically the chances of even the number 1 name appearing more than twice among a group of 30 kids are very very slim when you look at how few registrations even the most popular names receive each year now.

I do like the name, but equally don’t want to give my child a name and there be five people in the class with the same name 😩 I know that can’t necessarily be helped, but just want to have an idea of the popularity before settling on something.

You can never tell tho. We didn't pick Noah because it was SO popular. I know none. DS, yr 4, has to Nancy's in his class despite being ranked 71st.

Ezra is climbing steeply but it was just outside the top 50 in 2021

Agreed! DD1 had the most popular girls' name of her year and we only know 1 other! Whereas DS has a very unusual name (right down in the 7 or 800s from memory) and we've met at least 4, including someone locally who has it as their car number plate!

FayCarew · 11/05/2024 13:01

@LittleCoconut , names seem to be popular in certain areas and demographics, so even if they aren't massively popular, your little Ezra will be quite likely to be in a group where other parents will have liked the name.

Friends with an Ezra had Arlo and Ezra on their shortlist. Arlo is more popular by far, but both names are duplicated in his school class.

SallyWD · 11/05/2024 13:26

Two. Both around 7 years old.

user1471481356 · 11/05/2024 13:42

There are 4 at my son’s school! One 9/10 year old girl, my 3 year old son, and 2 other 3 year olds

MavisPennies · 11/05/2024 13:44

lemonyellows · 11/05/2024 13:44

Only the Star Wars one 😂

None in real life

Samzzz · 12/05/2024 00:50

My son is called Ezra and he is 3. He’s the only one in his nursery and I don’t know any others personally. However I do hear it quite a bit at local soft plays ect.

Treesarenotgreene · 12/05/2024 01:15

12
bellatrixlestrangex · 13/05/2024 15:24

One aged 5

Wasabiaddiction · 13/05/2024 15:41

All the Ezra's I know are elderly Jews who fled Iraq in the 1950s.

I think it's a lovely name and I would guess that the next generation will have lots of Ezra's in memory of the generation that fled.

TheCatterall · 13/05/2024 15:42

None. But it’s my favourite band.
