Do you prefer Amber or Amelia?

Amber is gorgeous.

Amelia is lovely too but they, and variations of, are everywhere

Vive42 · 09/05/2024 20:31

Amber used to be considered pretty chav. It’s not a name I would choose.

Amelia is overused.

I can’t choose either. Lots of other nice names.

Amelia is a medical condition meaning 'absence of limbs'. It also sounds dreadful with that 'mealy' noise in it! Uh mealy uh.

Amber is a beautiful name.

I never knew the meaning behind Amelia. Thank you

Definitely Amber. We couldn't use it as it wouldn't go with our family name but I've always loved it.

I think we've decided to go with it (although still quite a few weeks to go so we'll see whether we change our minds!)
This thread has helped as I thought a lot more people would prefer Amelia

That isn´t the meaning behind Amelia. Amelia comes from Amal which means industrious, it was very favoured in Germanic royal families. It has nothing to do with the word amelia from Greek a-(without)-melos (members), it is just a coincidence which is churned out here ad nauseam.
My landlady is Amelia and I don´t particularly like her, but her name is pretty. Amber to me sounds American and dare I say it, chavvy.

I’ve only ever known one Amber. She’s Canadian and beautiful. With Amber eye colour in fact.

It is the medical definition. It is the name of the condition.

WalkWithMeSuzieLee · 14/05/2024 16:45

They're both lovely but there are far more Amelias than Ambers so for that reason I'd go for Amber.

NetMum2 · 14/05/2024 17:52

I really like the name Amelia and it’s most definitely a popular and very pretty girls name. I’ve checked for myself and it is indeed a medical term too. Here is the definition in the Collins dictionary:

amelia
in British English
(əˈmiːlɪə )
NOUNpathologythe congenital absence of arms or legs

ABirdsEyeView · 14/05/2024 18:06

I nearly called my dd Amber Elise. I still think it's beautiful

The name favoured by the German and Dutch RF is Amalia, not Amelia.

savoycabbage · 14/05/2024 21:55

Definitely Amber.

I was with a reception class for a week last week and by the end of the first day I had learnt all of the names except for a clutch of Emilia/Amelias.
