What’s your impression of this name?
My husbands reaction was, ‘but we’re not Scottish’ which threw me as it’s always sounded rather Viking to me. This is mainly the reason I haven’t thought about it too hard - I love it but to me it’s always felt a bit out there, a bit of a crazy choice that will have people giving each other side eye behind our backs.
I’ve never met one or heard of one.
Thoughts?

I would say it was OK if you were Nordic or Scottish but otherwise, no.

I've known a few and, if I'm honest op, its always been a mistake.

Its a big name to live up to in terms of its meaning, "great", and imo it is hard not to end up with the name being slightly comical in application.

Ironically, most times I've known of a Magnus (or Max) they have in fact been noticeably diminutive in stature. I say noticeably, but was it made more noticeable because if you walk round being called great big, it maybe sticks out more that you are not?

Then there's the alternative; a knew a Magnus who was very much a great big Magnus and, again, it hit a funny bone, and wasn't particularly flattering

Then there's the whole sports day, prize day thing: Surely Anyone the Great should be winning everything!

I just think it is a type of name better avoided - though I love it for a dog! If you had a pet wolf or Nordic bear that would be even better!
