What do you think of this list of boy names

We have pretty weird taste
mostly as I worked in childcare for ten years and associate traditional names with children I had in my care (not in a bad way …it’s just those names are taken . It’s very hard to explain!)

So here’s some boy names we like:
Carlisle (baby Lisle) (never read twilight I’ve only watched the films once, not fans or anything …but I love the name)
Callahan (baby Cali)
and
Calder

oh and my husband likes : Arn….baby Arnie

have no preference on C names just coincidentally all start with a C.

Sorry but none are to my taste but I voted for Callahan as the best and I do really like Cal for short - that would be a good option for when he’s older.

WaltzingWaters · 30/04/2024 22:15

Definitely Callahan/Cali/Cal for me.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/04/2024 22:28

As far as surnames as first names go, Callahan is quite cool (Isn’t that Dirty Harry’s surname from the classic film?)- and nn Cal is very cool too (rather than Cali which sounds quite feminine). I can see a young boy/ teenager liking that name.

Carlisle just reminds me of the place and Calder sounds too much like Colder when said quickly.

SkaneTos · 30/04/2024 22:31

I voted for Callahan. Cool name!

Arn/Arnie is a great name! Arne or Arn are old Norse names, I am Scandinavian and I know several men with name Arne.

Carlisle makes me think of the surname Carlisle, and the "Downton Abbey"-character Sir Richard Carlisle, who was not very nice to Lady Mary.

BingThing · 30/04/2024 22:33

I like Callaghan and Arnie - both cool and unusual but not too much so

ThisElatedQuail · 30/04/2024 22:34

Thanks for responses! I have a feeling we’ll use Callahan actually! My favourite is Calder but I think the shared preference would be Callahan x perhaps Arne as a middle name?

Not really a fan of any of these names, though Callahan sounds ok but I don’t like the Cali nickname. Would definitely use Cal.

takeitorleave · 30/04/2024 22:40

What about Lyell

YourWinter · 30/04/2024 22:41

Everyone will assume it’s spelt Callaghan, might make your son’s life rather easier if you don’t omit the “g”. Nice name btw, I don’t like the others!

Lilacdew · 30/04/2024 22:43

I like Calder best. It sounds like the name of a really cool mystery writer or jazz musician! Cal for short.

Not keen on Callahan - I'm old enough for it just to be the surname of an elderly prime minister.

My husband loves this name! I don’t know if it’s too formal? Xx

Dislike all these options. Carlisle is the worst.

Coolblur · 01/05/2024 00:07

Carlisle just makes me think of the city, so not a child's name. Calder also is a commonly used place name in Scotland.
Callahan is the best of those, but only because it could be shortened to Cal (not Cali, that's a girls name). It's different, but not too out there.

SnowFrogJelly · 01/05/2024 00:49

All terrible

Especially Carlisle and Arn Confused

coxesorangepippin · 01/05/2024 01:48

I love Calder, mainly because I grew up near the River Calder 🙂

MariaVT65 · 01/05/2024 02:10

Don’t like any of them tbh but Callahan is the best.

He will have an issue with constantly having to spell out his name for the whole of his life though. And it’s long.

Please use Cal instead of Cali. Cali is a girl’s name.

MariaVT65 · 01/05/2024 02:11

I’d at least have Caledon rather than Callahan.

NetMum2 · 01/05/2024 05:09

I voted for Callahan (nn Cal)

When I was trying to decide on a name for my baby, someone suggested practicing shouting the name out of the front door - it really helped!

JimPansy · 01/05/2024 19:20

Carlisle (baby Lisle). Lisle looks like Liesl, a girl's name.
Callahan (baby Cali) - ok as a surname
Calder - OK as a river name.
Arn….baby Arnie

Arnold nn Arnie is fine. The others are dreadful.

KayEmAy · 01/05/2024 20:09

I LOVE Callahan
I'm neutral on Calder

Carlisle and Arnie aren't my style
