Boys names that are out of the ordinary, or related to 'nature'

We don't know if we are having a girl or a boy and if we have a boy I have no idea what we are going to call him!

Help!

Our first daughter is called Daisy Harriet, and I've decided that if we have a girl the next one will be called Clover (possibly second name, Amelie) - corny I know, but it's because Daisy and Clover grow together. (she says a bit sheepishly).

I love names rooted in nature, but boys names are very hard to come across. I like the name Cyrus (no nature link there at all by the way), but apart from that I'm drawing a blank. I briefly considered the name Leif (kind of norweigian name I think, but it's bordering on sounding too hippy). I don't mind the name Seth, but it reminds me of that old bloke with a flat cap who used to be on Emmerdale.

These are the other names I've considered, but they do have to go with a very boring English surname, so some of them would sound ridiculous.

Lorne
Cassius
Cyrus
Juno
Isaac (meaning laughter)
Oren (tree)
Roden (from the valley of the reeds)
Varden (meaning green)
Merle (meaning blackbird)

Does anyone have any bright ideas?

Hi,

Would you consider Blaine? It means.....get this...skinny & hungry looking .

No, I have NOT made this up! I think I saw it in a Hebrew book of boys names.

TheFallenMadonna · 01/04/2008 22:58

If I saw the name Juno or Merle I would be expecting a girl to appear I think.

Seth is lovely and 'goes' with your girls' names, if that matters?

Aero · 01/04/2008 22:58

I know a Leif (he is Finnish), a Moss (Greek and probably short for something) and Rowan is ds2's middle name.

seeker · 01/04/2008 23:02

Juno and Merle are bot most definitely girls' names. Really truly - don't do it!

And I would avoid Roden - it only needs another "t"...........

Rowan is lovely.

Ashley shortened to Ash?

Robert shortened to Robin?

LynetteScavo · 01/04/2008 23:02

Personally I wouldn't put Daisy and Clover together.........

There are a few Seths around now, so it seems to be more popular.

Don't like Roden (Rodent), or Varden.

Leif is fab, certainly not too hippyish, but not too sure about with Daisy.

Dragonbutter · 01/04/2008 23:03

Sol (latin for sun)
Nyx (greek for night)
Cedar, Ash, Oak
Willow, Hazel, Fern
River

LynetteScavo · 01/04/2008 23:03

LOL at Blaine.... the one I know is not atall skinny or hungry looking.

LynetteScavo · 01/04/2008 23:05

Daisy and Sol go brilliantly together.

Dragonbutter · 01/04/2008 23:07

Tara means Star
Star is nice

What about using names from lovely places you've been or that are important to you?
Names of beaches, coves, valleys.

TheFallenMadonna · 01/04/2008 23:08

I know an Oak(ley).

But I prefer Seth.

Lubyloo · 01/04/2008 23:09

Basil?

edam · 01/04/2008 23:09

You do realise that sisters named Daisy and Clover are likely to be teased a bit, don't you?

Isaac's OK. Rowan's nice. Cassius would only work if you are black (since the most famous person with that name in modern times was the man who became Mohammed Ali). Juno's a female name, she was a Goddess.

Dragonbutter · 01/04/2008 23:09

CD, , and a mighty fine beer at that

cadelaide · 01/04/2008 23:09

I know a boy Merle.

Well, he's about 60 actually, American, lovely man.

edam · 01/04/2008 23:11

That link is weird about Neil, btw, most baby name books give it as German meaning something like warrier or champion, IIRC.
