Boys names that are out of the ordinary, or related to 'nature'

We don't know if we are having a girl or a boy and if we have a boy I have no idea what we are going to call him!

Help!

Our first daughter is called Daisy Harriet, and I've decided that if we have a girl the next one will be called Clover (possibly second name, Amelie) - corny I know, but it's because Daisy and Clover grow together. (she says a bit sheepishly).

I love names rooted in nature, but boys names are very hard to come across. I like the name Cyrus (no nature link there at all by the way), but apart from that I'm drawing a blank. I briefly considered the name Leif (kind of norweigian name I think, but it's bordering on sounding too hippy). I don't mind the name Seth, but it reminds me of that old bloke with a flat cap who used to be on Emmerdale.

These are the other names I've considered, but they do have to go with a very boring English surname, so some of them would sound ridiculous.

Lorne
Cassius
Cyrus
Juno
Isaac (meaning laughter)
Oren (tree)
Roden (from the valley of the reeds)
Varden (meaning green)
Merle (meaning blackbird)

Does anyone have any bright ideas?

Leif can be pronounced 2 ways - "Leaf" or "Layf".

Another Norwegian name is Tor - from Thor the god of Thunder, but it's also Scottish for hill - so there's a nature link there.

Dragonbutter · 02/04/2008 11:46

Reef. Nice one.
I know a girl called Oceane. She's french so it's pronounced Oh-shee-an.
I also know a Ciel, french for sky, and think that's lovely.

morethanmum · 02/04/2008 11:52

Rex - vaguely lionlike. (Lions are natural?)

Buckets · 02/04/2008 12:28

I'm loving Todd myself, thanks for that one. Waiting for DH's opinion...

the world of names is soo different to 30 years ago

30 years ago Tariq would not have been a high court judge. now i truly think anything goes

seeker · 02/04/2008 13:23

Tariq would have been a High Court Judge in Pakistan......

shoshe · 02/04/2008 13:30

Paula I throughly agree with you, and by the tim ethe children born now are High Court Judges, no name will be that different.

GooseyLoosey · 02/04/2008 13:33

Rowan? And I once knew someone called Ashton.

tortoiseSHELL · 02/04/2008 13:36

I think the best suggestions are Sol and Rowan. I really like Isaac but don't think it goes as well with Daisy.

I would be careful of Daisy and Clover too - you would need to expect some 'when's Ermintrude coming?' type comments. What about another flower name like Iris or Violet?

Dragonbutter · 02/04/2008 13:38

I have a Sol and get mixed reactions.
Mostly the over 60s think it's stupid while the under 30s think it's cool.
It suits him so well as he has such a sunny nature.
Whether he becomes a high court judge is entirely up to him.

seeker · 02/04/2008 13:43

I like Sol too - so long as it's short for Solomon!

Dragonbutter · 02/04/2008 13:47

But i'm not religious so while the name solomon is a lovely name, i didn't want a religious meaning to the name.
Seeker, I am amused by your determination to encourage boringness but why???

seeker · 02/04/2008 13:55

I'm not religious either, but I have a Grace and a Patrick....

I think Lorne is quite a good name, Scottish. An area of fantastic natural beauty as well.

pointydog · 02/04/2008 14:01

merle is a girl's name

pointydog · 02/04/2008 14:03

Glen

seeker · 02/04/2008 14:04

Lachlann?

Blandmum · 02/04/2008 14:05

Fang
Bear
Wolf
Foxy

TwoFirTreesToday · 02/04/2008 14:49

Blaize

um, and instead of clover how about Poppy? Also grows together. Or Loveday?

chaoskay · 02/04/2008 21:36

Thing is Jamie Oliver has two daughters called Daisy and Poppy, and I don't want to look like a copycat. The only other girls name I've seriously considered is Saffron, but maybe it sounds a bit posh? I can't get on with Violet, because it just reads like 'Violent' to me, lol.

I've already anticipated the cow jokes, but there'll be three years between them and I don't think it will be a problem. I've also been buying clover margarine for weeks now to see if I am able to put myself out of favour with the name - I still like it!

Now also considering Sol for a boy. Nice, sunny meaning.

Dragonbutter (nice username by the way) you have come up with some gorgeous names, but problem is my surname is Wilkinson, which is very boring and makes some slightly unusual names sound downright ridiculous. Doesn't lend itself to being very quirky unfortunately.

If we have a boy I'd love to give him the middle name 'Danger' because it would just be great for him when he gets to be a teenager and pulling girls. You can just imagine the chat up lines! But once again, no! Could seriously backfire.

I love Tor, but I suggesed it to OH, and he just said something about 'taking a tor', (tour) in a very northern accent. Sorry, can't get away with that one.

Is it possible to over think the name your child is going to live with day in, day out?! Anyway, I thought of Clover before I even made the connection between them both being similar plants - it's just that once I made that connection, it just sounded perfect in my head.

Rain sounds lovely, but I think we see enough of that around here anyway.

Oooh! It's all very difficult - but it does stop me thinking about that awkward squeezing a baby out issue that is looming. Due on 17th April, and not looking forward to the giving birth thing - would much rather sit here and try and think of unusual names. (the other option is to stick my fingers in my ears and go 'La-la-la, it's not gonna happen!') - but it so is.....

P.S I can't believe how friendly and helpful you all are. I've only just started using this site, and there's a really thriving community on here.

Thanks for all your suggestions, even the Fred, Bob, Peter ones! (she says with a wry grin!)

Rock? Rocky?

Arne (Fire, if I remember correctly)
Bjorn (bear in norwegian)
Orn (eagle in norwegian)

Kai is a lovely name.
Kai is pier in norwegian, willow in a native american language, ocean in hawaiian, and uncooked fruit in a south indian language (mayalam? spoken in Kerala)
