Hello All!
A new DS AND new DD on the way in the family.

For reasons which will become clear!
We're on the hunt for names which end in the letters LIL.

Are there even any?
Have come up with some masculine ones, and have found a few examples in Scandinavian/German lists, but struggling for many.

Thank you!

Thanks for these! Anyone else able to advise?
Wonder if its more a scandi thing than elsewhere?

I can't think of any. Can I ask why you want names ending in lil?

SkaneTos · 22/04/2024 22:27

Hello!
I'm Scandinavian and the names that I can think of are the girl names "Lill" and "Inga-Lill"/Ingalill", but those names have two of the letter L in the end, not one. "Lill" means small in Swedish. It can also be connected to lily, the flower. I think Lill can also be short for Lilian/Lillian.

It's not become clear why you've severely restricted yourself to names ending in 'lil', or have I missed something?

Yah, that’s what I was thinking too. Was surprised as the names I founded that ended in the suffix were not Scandi at all! It’s not something I have found common.

FWIW, there are a few Hebrew names ending in -lil.

I think all of these are pretty rare, but I've met at least one "real life" person with each. In these names the last syllable is usually stressed, and pronounced something like LEEL:

Delil/Dlil (f): I've heard of this as a variation of Delilah, but I've never met a Dlil. The 2 Delils I've met personally are both Israelis of Kurdish/Turkish background and I believe the name is probably (or also) Kurdish

Galil (m): rolling hills; or from the place name Galilee

Ilil (f): a made-up/literary name popularized by poet Shaul Tchernichovsky

Jalil (m): great, or beseeching - this is used in the Bible, but probably borrowed from the Arabic Jaleel

Kilil (f & m): crowned, emerging. A girls' name in modern Hebrew, but I've also met a (non-Jewish, American) male Kilil

Tslil/Tzlil (f & m): modern Hebrew: sound, music
