I'm really liking Dylan more and more, and love the meaning behind it too.
I've been trying to find a Welsh boys name that works well in England (no ruining of pronunciation), we live in the south east but my mum's family are Welsh so would love to honour the heritage with a name without ruining it with English accents 😂

My son is called Tomos. But Tom for short.

Names in his class include Taliesin. But Tally for short.

Other names easy to pronounce… Sean, Gareth, Geraint, Dafydd, Dai

How are you pronouncing Dylan?!

After posting I've since read some more posts and realised I definitely pronounce it the English way 😅 how does it differ? I've actually realised I've never heard a Welsh person say Dylan

A good friend's son is a Dylan. She has often complained that people misspell it, e.g. Dilon, Dillon.

wobblyweasel · 20/04/2024 21:39

It's my DH name, he's from North Wales and it's pronounced dull-ann instead of dil-ann xxx

FirstFallopians · 20/04/2024 21:40

Dylan had a real moment in the mid 2000s- it seemed every other baby boy born to slightly alternative parents was called Dylan.

My personal opinion is that if you use a non-English name, it’s important to use the original pronunciation instead of the anglicisation. Appreciate Dylan, like Caitlín, is probably a lost cause at this stage, but I wouldn’t use a minority language name and then not use their pronunciation.

roycroppersshopper · 20/04/2024 21:42

Efor (think its Ivan in English?) or Yolin?

Not quite. English pronunciation is more like dill-unn
welsh pronunciation is dull-ann but the /a/ is like the /a/ in cat. English people really struggle with this. Especially as the emphasis is on the first syllable.

How does he spell it? A U is an I in Welsh. My old neighbour is called Dulan, pronounced Dillan.

oObyeOo · 20/04/2024 21:49

Aled

PoppingTomorrow · 20/04/2024 21:53

For Dylan most non-Welsh will think (wrongly) that they know how to pronounce it.

Aled, Marc, Owen, Elis, Wyn, Bryn - all straightforward pronunciation though may be mispelled

Rhodri, Huw, Hefin, Morgan, Rhys, Sion, pronunciation likely won't be quite right but may be near enough.

I like Nye (short for Aneurin)

I also like
Ifor
Ifan
Ieuan
Iestyn

Owain, Alun, LlÅ·r, Llewelyn, Tudur, Dylan, will all be mispronounced at first/by some.

I like Dylan, Tomos and Owen. I also love Llyr.

There was a contestant on an afternoon game show this past week called Llyr, he spent the whole show being called Clear. He explained how it was pronounced, presenter almost got it then immediately reverted to Clear.

theduchessofspork · 20/04/2024 21:57

I like it

I really like Idris and I like Gawain both of which work fine in England

Zanatdy · 20/04/2024 22:06

I have a Dylan, I’m Welsh but live in England. I personally love the name
