I'm really liking Dylan more and more, and love the meaning behind it too.
I've been trying to find a Welsh boys name that works well in England (no ruining of pronunciation), we live in the south east but my mum's family are Welsh so would love to honour the heritage with a name without ruining it with English accents 😂

I love Dylan.

I also really like -

Tomos
Rhys
Elis
Hari
Griff
Glyn
Huw
Jac
Lewis
Trystan

Less easy to pronounce but I love-

Ioan (Yowan)
Neirin (Ny-rin) - Nye for short
Osian (Osh-an)

Owen! This is my youngest grandson name. It's spelt Eoin and pronounced Owen.

My daughter is half Irish by her dad side. My 2nd husband, her stepdad, is Welsh. Hence, it was a nod both ways.

I don't think the ex was over happy, but that's his problem.

Also, Tudor, which is my BiL, name us Welsh. It gets shortened to Tud. My husband name is David

So my options are with names shortened too, usually

Owen or Eoin spelling
David (Usually shortened to Dai)
Tudor (Tud for short)

That's how they say it in Ireland too

Is it?
I'm Irish and have never heard it said as Dull-ann here, always Dill-ann.

OnHerSolidFoundations · 20/04/2024 22:33

@Teaalwayshelps my friend in Dublin assures me that's how they pronounce it 🤷‍♀️

In fact it's why he doesn't like the name.

OnHerSolidFoundations · 20/04/2024 22:35

God I wouldn't go Osian. It's SO overused round here.

OnHerSolidFoundations · 20/04/2024 22:38

Idris
Hari
Morgan
Floyd
Lewis
Jac
Aron
Ceri

LolaJ87 · 20/04/2024 22:41

Dylan is a lovely name!

I love Evan but am biased since I chose it for my son.

saere · 20/04/2024 22:44

Hari
Tomos
Ianto
Dai
Iolo

Is your friend Irish?
Maybe an accent thing?
Anyway, it's Dill-ann ime.

Blueuggboots · 20/04/2024 23:01

I went to infant school with a Gwyn.

NameChangedAgainn · 20/04/2024 23:19

I love Dylan pronounced the Welsh way, but it doesn't work if you're looking for a Welsh name that won't be pronounced differently in England.
Other Welsh boy names that are easy to pronounce:
Sion
Aled
Tom (Tomos)
Rhys
Eirian
Bryn
Gwydion

welshpolarbear · 20/04/2024 23:26

Dylan should be pronounced Dull-an if you want it pronounced the Welsh way, but it England everyone will just say Dill-an I'm afraid.

Owen, Tali, Elis (it is spelt with 1 L in Welsh) Huw, are all nice.

I found a shortage of Welsh names I liked though to be honest. May be due to associating names with people growing up though.

MrsCarson · 20/04/2024 23:55

I like
Caradog (Crad)
Elis
Iolo
Madoc
Evan
Owain
and Huw

GogLais · 21/04/2024 20:29

Dylan is DULL-ann in Welsh. He'll be Dillun.
Sean isn't Welsh. Siôn is but will get said as Sigh-un.
Geraint will get mispronounced
Gareth will be 'Garruth'
Dafydd will be mispronounced and misspelt
Dai will get Day and Di
Meirion will get said as Merrion and misspelt
Rhodry is a misspelling of Rhodri

Ceri will be mispronounced and misspelt, and will be thought of as a girl's name
Eirian will be mispronounced and misspelt, and will be thought of as a girl's name

Gawain will be mispronounced and misspelt

Gwydion will be mispronounced and misspelt

Dulan AFAIK isn't a Welsh name, but will be mispronounced and misspelt

Efor (think its Ivan in English?) or Yolin?
Efor isn't a name but Ifor is, but is anglicised as Ivor not Ivan.
Yolin isn't a Welsh name.
Floyd isn't Welsh

Quite a few of the suggestions seem quite middle-aged.

SallyWD · 21/04/2024 20:41

I love Dylan.

IntriguingFactJumble · 21/04/2024 20:47

Rhodry was my mistake, apologies. I came across it in Katharine Kerr's Deverry series about 30 years ago.

ShinyEspeon · 21/04/2024 20:54

I have a Dylan, I didn't know how it was pronounced in Wales!
I still love it the most of all my children's names, but I'm somewhat concerned I've been offending some Welsh people now!

GogLais · 22/04/2024 11:57

@IntriguingFactJumble , her celtic names are made up but loosely based on Welsh.

@ShinyEspeon , It's a bit like someone saying Percy-fone or Hermy-own.

oObyeOo · 20/04/2024 21:49

How does he spell it? A U is an I in Welsh. My old neighbour is called Dulan, pronounced Dillan.

Y is ‘uh’ in welsh so Dylan is Dul-an, in South Wales though most pronounce it Dil-un, even Welsh speakers.

pontipinemum · 22/04/2024 12:13

I like it, I only know 1 Dylan. I'm Irish (Munster) I pronounce it Dill-in

Spidey66 · 22/04/2024 12:16

Love Dylan

I live in South Wales, have known many Dylan's and never heard anyone pronounce it "Dil-un" here.

GogLais · 22/04/2024 12:28

My friend from Swansea says it as DULL-ann
