I'm really liking Dylan more and more, and love the meaning behind it too.
I've been trying to find a Welsh boys name that works well in England (no ruining of pronunciation), we live in the south east but my mum's family are Welsh so would love to honour the heritage with a name without ruining it with English accents 😂

I’m Welsh and in south wales and have only ever heard Dylan pronounced
Dil-un so I really wouldn’t worry about it. There’s no Welsh name police (off of mumsnet obv) 😂

GogLais · 22/04/2024 18:48

@ShinyEspeon , Rhiddaer is based on Rhydd + Ddaear, I think, but that would be a literal translation of Free + Earth, and Rhydd-wlad or Gwlad Rydd would make more sense.
Many of the posts are by non-Welsh (speaking) posters so we're used to misspellings and strange suggestions.

@Whackawhacka , OP has Welsh family and they might roll their eyes at 'Dillun'. The name is very popular in North Wales (as DULL-ann) but it's very 1960s/70s.

@DimLlaeth , I like Alun but it often gets said as Alan, which ruins it for me.

@roycroppersshopper , Yolin might be Iolyn, which I've only seen/heard in place names. Unfortunately it looks like 'Lolyn', which is not a good thing to be called. Iolo is quite popular.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/04/2024 19:03

I asked about the pronunciation because I think of you pronounce it Dull-an when you are 100% English is a little try hard. Dylan pronounced Dill-an is a perfectly nice and acceptable “English” name.

If I’d ever had a son, I’d loved to have called him Aneurin nn Nye.

Watchwatchmymysteedsteedgogofarfar · 22/04/2024 19:15

I'm Welsh and pronounce it Dylan. I only know one person who says 'dull-an' Thomas.
My dh likes the name gruffudd (griff)
Iolo is a name in my dcs class (they pronounce it yoh-low) but I imagine it would be difficult to understand that in England. Their name is shortened from Ioreth which is a variation of another name. Not sure if they made up the variation or not!

GogLais · 22/04/2024 19:20

@BitOutOfPractice , I think it might compare to using a name like Ottilie for a baby and insisting on the German pronunciation when you have no German connection and live in Northamptonshire.

@Watchwatchmymysteedsteedgogofarfar , Iolo is YOH-loh. Ioreth is from Iorwerth, I think. I think they're all forms of Edward.
I like Iolo and Iori.

GogLais · 22/04/2024 19:37

Sorry I meant Yorath (anglicised form of Iorwerth) not Ioreth. Ioreth is a female character from Lord of the Rings.

mimiscards · 22/04/2024 19:44

Love the name Dylan

I know, they didn't like the spelling of Iowerth so changed it! And yes, you are right it should be pronounced yoh loh but they just don't.

Iori is so nice. Not heard that before!

GogLais · 23/04/2024 12:52

@Watchwatchmymysteedsteedgogofarfar , Iorwerth is nice but the Rs might make it tricky. Might get said at 'Your worth'.
I like Iolo, it seems a strong unfussy name. Iori (Yorry) is cute.

@BitOutOfPractice , the downside is if say Rhys and Ffion were living in Somerset wanted to use a name like Dylan or Alun (unlikely as they are dated), they'd have to accept that he'd be called 'Dillun' or 'Alan' outside the family.

mrswoody10 · 23/04/2024 15:17

Just seen this thread having started my own re Islwyn! I believe pronounced iss-le-win. It was my Grandad's name I think it means from the forest or similar.

GogLais · 23/04/2024 15:31

@mrswoody10 , it's 2 syllables. Sort of ISS-lou-in but the lou-in merges into each other so it's one syllable. (sort of the same as how loin is not lo-in)
Is (ees) means under, Llwyn is shrub.
It's the name of a mountain and could be a place name.
I link it with Cysgod y Cryman - author Islwyn Ffowc Elis - Wikipedia

PTSDBarbiegirl · 23/04/2024 15:32

It's a nice name but there are tons of Dylans.

thanks for this! We're thinking probably a middle name because don't want him to forever be having to correct people (we are not in Wales as you may have guessed 😂)

GogLais · 23/04/2024 16:03

@mrswoody10 , honour names are great as middle names. I like it. It seems very dated as a first name, but more like a 'great-grandfather' name. I don't think it was wildly popular.

pizzawinecake · 23/04/2024 16:27

I have one but spelt differently (it's also considered an Indian name- debatable if it has Sanskrit origins too or is now a modern fusion name ). Constant misspellings but that's probably because I've spelt it differently. Drives me mad though

Flopsy145 · 25/04/2024 15:13

My DH decided he wasn't sure on Dylan in the end after all that so instead honouring my Welsh grandfather as one of middle names, Gethin, and going for our other option as a first name (Edward).
Thanks all though, was great to have such an insight and appreciate people's thoughts and experiences!

Good choice @Flopsy145 .

LlynTegid · 25/04/2024 16:59

Dylan after one of the greatest poets and writers of the 20th century seems a good choice to me.

Biomic · 25/04/2024 17:24

Dylan is nice also like
Gryff
Macsen (Maxen)
Bryn
