To use no middle name

DH and I have a double barrelled name and are giving it to our kid in a few weeks. We're both tempted to not do a middle name so the child doesn't have a ridiculously long name. Everyone I know has middle names but I can't see any issues with not having one. For context the surname will be Bermitad-Dowell.

there are people with longer surnames. I would still do middle names.

There is no rule that says you have to have a middle name, in my experience (and in our case) they are often used in memory of loved ones or to keep the peace in a family (no MIL, I’m not calling her some obscure French name I can’t pronounce or spell but I’ll shove it in as a second middle name if it will shut you up). If you are happy with none leave it at that.

DH, myself and all of our children have something in common - none of us have middle names.

It hasn't negatively impacted us in life at all. In fact, form filling is incredibly fast.

My brother got a middle name, but I didn't. No point getting upset about it. It has made life easier for me.

I don't have a middle name. I still have 20 letters in my full name, I don't feel the need for any more, it never fits into the boxes on forms as it is😁

I wanted one so much from when I was a small child. I felt left out when friends were discussing theirs.

I'm not bothered by it, nor do I think it's better. It just is. But it's never caused any issues. I don't understand giving a middle name for the sake of it - why bother if you're not fussed and can't think of one?

I have a middle name, and the only use it gets are being printed on my passport and birth certificate. I could quite happily not have one, and it wouldn't make a jot of difference to me.

I wouldn't bother with giving a middle name. There are no rules that say one must be given and I've no idea why some posters look like they are pleading with you to give one.

You don't have to, you don't want to and it would make your child's name very long. So just don't.

It's a right of passage for people to discuss their middle names!
In one job I needed 3 letters to make a user name. They used everyones initials- I only had 2, had to make one up

But I'd agree with posters that your child might feel like missing out on something.

Speaking from experience here, as we didn't gjve DC a middle for similar reasons, then she asked us herself to add one when she was around 8 (which we did, and was a bit of a hassle for various reasons)

I always felt slightly hard done by not having a middle name! I gave both my children two middle names. They're a bit of a mouthful but fun I think

Why didn’t you just use the second letter of your surname?

My kids don’t have middle names. They are 14 and 10 and have lived their lives so far with no issues.

I told then when they were little that they get to choose their own. Ds was ironman for a few years and dd is currently unicorn

I like it with the middle name & it's not too long.

middle names don't have much purpose, but kids can feel left out not having one.

I love not having a middle name. I love how clean my name is written down. Everyone at school had a middle name and I felt a bit special not having one!!

Yeah that’s odd! We do first name and first and last letter of surname. Why would you make one up?!

DP: no middle name, not a ‘thing’ in his culture
Dc: both surnames hyphenated, no middle names. No one misses it.

DD has no middle name. I just don't see the point of having one,.
