I am due soon with our first DS and we are having such a hard time choosing a name. He will have 2 sisters who have quite classic names, nothing too unusual.

Our shortlist (in no order)
Edward (nn Teddy/Ted/Eddie)
Casper

Hugo

What do you think of these names? Any other suggestions?

Thank you!

I love Edward - and I love all 3 short versions of Teddy / Ted and Eddie - it’s so versatile for all ages and personalities, and gives options if there are other Edward’s in his class.

I don’t particularly love Casper or Hugo, personally, but they are solid names.

Other ideas

Jasper
Toby
George
Arthur
Sebastian
Zachary
Max
Isaac
Louis
Harry
Henry
Joseph
Jacob
Alexander
Elijah / Eli
Samuel
Benjamin
Thomas
Samuel

I love Edward and all the diminutives. It would be on our list if we didn't already have one in our lives!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 05/04/2024 18:49

Love Hugo.

SophiaRose35 · 05/04/2024 19:51

Edward- lots of nicknames too!

shoopshoopdedoo · 05/04/2024 20:48

I love Edward. Classic and works for whoever he wants to be! I’d use the nickname Eddie though - every little boy I meet seems to be called Teddy!

Hugo is OK but still screams “posh” to me, although it’s now pretty popular.

Not a fan of Casper at all.

Also love the suggestions of Isaac, Alexander, George, Samuel and Benjamin.

LizzieBet14 · 05/04/2024 21:19

If you choose Edward, I'd have one shortened version & stick to it. I know a 7 year old Edward who goes by 5 different names - poor kid - I swear he doesn't know who he really is!

I love Edward and the nicknames you mentioned. My cousin named his son Ned which I think is awful.

ShoesoftheWorld · 05/04/2024 21:56

I think Caspar is spelled with two As? Quite like it. Not keen on Hugo. Edward is OK but I really dislike Teddy and variants.

Oscar goes with your style, but is quite popular, I think.

You could go a bit retro with Robert, Philip, Paul?

CallMikeBanning · 05/04/2024 22:10

I don't like Teddy or Hugo or Casper so we probably have different tastes but how about
Anthony or Alistair.

Teentaxidriver · 05/04/2024 22:12

Love Edward shortened to Ned, might that work?

Teentaxidriver · 05/04/2024 22:13

Love Hugo too - such a classic name

Teentaxidriver · 05/04/2024 22:13

Hugo also rare

SkaneTos · 05/04/2024 22:15

They are all great names!
My favourite would be Casper.

InferiorDesign · 05/04/2024 22:17

Edward is my least favourite of those, just cos I think Teddy is overdone

DearSilverGirl · 05/04/2024 22:19

How about Laurence (Laurie)?

Lifeinlists · 05/04/2024 22:21

@Moreteaandchocolate you obviously like Samuel as you've typed it twice! But I can only agree with youWink Great name!
I like nearly all your other suggestions too.
I think I'd add William to the list.

SE13Mummy · 05/04/2024 22:34

I love Edward, with Ted or Ned as nicknames. Henry, Gabriel and Reuben are other names I think are along the same lines.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/04/2024 23:43

Edward! If in doubt between multiple names if you like them the same - I generally say go for the most classic, timeless option ( especially if siblings have also got similarly classic names - I might go for Hugo or Casper if sisters were more unusual Persephone and Octavia for example as Edward might sound a bit boring in comparison).

Casper and Hugo are also very trendy now - especially Hugo. Plus I’d have no idea what age or background an Edward was and that can be a real benefit as he grows older.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/04/2024 23:49

I had Edward on my own list btw - along with similar classics:
Alexander
William
James
Thomas
Samuel
Nathaniel
Michael
Maximilian/Max
Hugh (not Hugo)

Apart from Hugh and possibly Max and Michael, they are all pretty timeless ( hard to guess ages) and backgrounds I think.

NewName24 · 06/04/2024 00:41

Like most, it seems, I like Edward. Though I don't like Ted or Teddie.

But I don't like Hugo or Casper.

If you want 'classic', what about
James
Charles
Alexander
George
Henry
David
Andrew
Peter
Robert

mathanxiety · 06/04/2024 00:50

Ivo
Clement
Ambrose
Joseph
Felix
Barnaby
Edmund

I like the three names you're considering.

Edward with NN Teddy would be lovely.
I like Hugo a little more than Caspar, but you can't go wrong with any of the three imo.
