Movie/film ruin this name or AIBU?

Hi everyone - bit of a dilemma, having our son in a few weeks and still undecided on a name.

For ages pre-pregnancy we planned on naming a future son after my grandad, Ken, probably a variation on Kenny etc, but since I've been pregnant and the Barbie movie has come out I just can't stop thinking that he'll get mercilessly mocked/Kennoughed/'I'm just Ken'

Hubby thinks IABU as Barbie & Ken have been around for yonks and the hype phase will pass. What do you reckon?

OP posts:

I agree, I'd keep it as a middle name and opt for something else for the first name.

WaltzingWaters · 30/03/2024 06:38

I’d say middle name also.

Catandsquirrel · 30/03/2024 06:43

What are you actually thinking of using- Kenneth then a nickname or Kenny?

I think it's a strong and ensuring association which continues to gain elements, the current quotes, the aqua song, the general cultural reference. I don't think it makes it unusable but it's not great timing and I think he will hear a lot about Barbie and Ken at school especially. The film will probably be popular for a while for young audiences.

I would use the full name (assuming your grandad was a Kenneth) rather than a short form which may give him more options. I know a youngish Kenneth that goes by the full version and it's quite a cool name.

Ken Barlow got there first in the ruining stakes .

Catandsquirrel · 30/03/2024 06:45

To clarify, I don't think Kenneth is unusable but would keep Ken or Kenny as a middle name if that's the version you really want

PMAmostofthetime · 30/03/2024 08:06

I think Kenny is cute, Barbie and Ken have been around for years and and the hype of this Movie is already passing.
I changed my mind on a name during Pregnancy and now really regret not using it x

KnickerlessParsons · 30/03/2024 08:16

If it helps to make your mind up, I heard that Barbie II is in the offing.

Howmanysleepsnow · 30/03/2024 08:19

I read the name and couldn’t think which movie you meant until you said (and I’ve watched it!) so no immediate connection for me.

Moreteaandchocolate · 30/03/2024 08:23

I’m not sure I’d use it now, sorry, as pp said I think there will be a Barbie 2 as it was such a big hit, and the Kenough jokes are very catchy!

Previousreligion · 30/03/2024 08:25

I know several Kennys and never think about Barbie.

PoppingTomorrow · 30/03/2024 08:26

Barbie and Ken have been around for decades. Its hardly a negative association.

I agree, go for Kenneth

MichaelAndEagle · 30/03/2024 08:26

"Oh my god, they killed Kenny! You bastards!"

That comes to mind for me.
But I actually think you should have the name you like. Kids will not be thinking about kenough or my South Park reference!

Shellyleppard1 · 30/03/2024 08:27

I would keep your grandad name as a middle one??? I have used this for both my sons

geoger · 30/03/2024 08:29

I wouldn’t associate the Barbie film with your son’s name. But, whenever I hear the name Kenny I think of Southpark

DuchessOfSausage · 30/03/2024 16:20

Kenny is nice. Kenny Dalglish and Kenny Logan.

NoHeavenNoMore · 30/03/2024 16:33

It's a very popular name round Liverpool area.

Came here to say just that, I know three young lads called Kenneth. I also know a little baby Jurgen!
