I like the names Owen and Quinn (thoughts?) but neither of Scottish origin so am also looking for any suggestions for a gender neutral / masculine leaning name from closer to home

Atholl

We used to have a wannabe local politician called Atholl, standing in all the elections (nowhere near Scotland).

All the people who found him annoying always tended to pronounce his name slightly differently...

I’m Scottish and was at school with both sexes of Rowans. Never met a female Robin though.

I know two female Robyns. Does it count if it’s spelt differently?

MissHoollie · 25/03/2024 21:54

I know of a few Blairs who are girls
What about connal..corrin..Afton..cree..

OneWiseDuck · 25/03/2024 22:15

For boys I love the name Sorley, comes from Somhairle. Also Callen/Cailean, Innes and Seoras.

For girls it’s Maggie, Marsaili, Ailis, Flora and Erin (that one isn’t Scottish!).

None of those are gender neutral I know 🤣

DaffodilsAlready · 25/03/2024 22:23

I love the Scottish name Sandy, short for Alexander, I think.

Northernsouloldies · 25/03/2024 22:29

It is and so is Acky.

@Mrsjayy "MHARI IS A DERIVATIVE OF MARY !"

Mrsjayy · 26/03/2024 14:39

Well Mary is a female name but OK

Mary/Mhairi aren’t gender neutral names - they’re female names

Robyn is more commonly used for girls.

How can a name be both masculine and gender neutral?!

‘Leaning toward’ masculine.

so Max, Jamie and Cameron are gender neutral but more masculine.
Lindsey, Mackenzie and Sandy are gender neutral but more feminine.

(just my feeling on them, others might disagree but I just used those to illustrate that names can be gender neutral but lean more one way or the other.)
