Xanthe or Imogen

Hello, I was hoping to get people's opinions on these two names. DH and I have struggled to agree on names and these are the only two contenders. I realise they're very different and that makes it difficult to choose.

Imogen is way more popular and Xanthe is a little more edgy and out there choice.

Which do you prefer?

No idea how to pronounce the first, so, Imogen.

BMIwoes · 22/03/2024 20:10

Not really sure how to pronounce Xanthe so I'd go for Imogen.

NuffSaidSam · 22/03/2024 20:11

I much prefer Xanthe.

I've never been keen on Imogen.

FraterculaArctica · 22/03/2024 20:11

You have fantastic taste 😊 My DD has one of these as her first name and the other as her middle name!

IsThePopeCatholic · 22/03/2024 20:12

I love them both. I have an Imogen.

Amazing! 😁 I'd love to know your other shortlisted girls names, if you'd be willing to share? Naming a human is HARD!

Xanthe

Very nice name

I find Imogen quite a clunky name

FraterculaArctica · 22/03/2024 20:17

It's a few years ago now but I think our other shortlisted names were Freya, Rowan and Eleanor .

Berlinlover · 22/03/2024 20:17

Both awful, sorry.

theothercatpurred · 22/03/2024 20:18

Both gorgeous names. I think Xanthe has the edge for me.

dancingqueen345 · 22/03/2024 20:18

There's a Xanthe in my mums group and absolutely no-one can pronounce it which would put me off.

BobbysSox · 22/03/2024 20:19

Much prefer Imogen.
Xanthe immediately makes me think of the drug Xanax I'm afraid.

RosaSkyes · 22/03/2024 20:19

I love Ianthe if you haven’t ruled it out

RosaSkyes · 22/03/2024 20:19

Feels somewhere in the middle

EveSix · 22/03/2024 20:22

Both lovely!

OverTheCountryClub · 22/03/2024 20:27

Much prefer Xanthe. I've taught two of them in the past 10 years or so, I England, and everyone was able to pronounce it fine! Much better than Imogen, which I don't really like at all.

MaloneMeadow · 22/03/2024 20:33

Xanthe feels quite pretentious to me. Imogen is super clunky. Not a fan of either

BurbageBrook · 22/03/2024 20:36

Surprised people can't pronounce Xanthe. It's not difficult and I thought it was fairly well-known. Personally I prefer Imogen though.

BurbageBrook · 22/03/2024 20:36

I meant to say I actually really love Imogen. Think it's gorgeous.

Moreteaandchocolate · 22/03/2024 20:54

Imogen is one of my favourite names, so I vote Imogen!

Nicebloomers · 22/03/2024 20:54

This was my first thought too.

ihadanolderboyfriend · 22/03/2024 20:57

I love the name Xanthe. So cool.

(Imogen is nice too)

theduchessofspork · 22/03/2024 20:58

How about Ianthe?

it’s very elegant - more unusual than Imogen, more sophisticated than Xanthe - Xanthe can be a short form

If not then Imogen

Workawayxx · 22/03/2024 21:00

I think Xanthe is lovely and think most people would be able to pronounce it. Imogen also nice but I love the idea of a potential shortening of xanthe to Xan. Sounds much more cool than immie!
