Lovely. Classy.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 23/03/2024 20:26

John is nice and due a revival.

amz4 · 23/03/2024 21:17

Jowan is the Cornish form of John 😊

Soowoo · 23/03/2024 21:42

John is a great name.

@IamnotwhouthinkIam I don’t understand why John dipped in popularity
Jack replaced John.

There were lots of Johns at (Welsh) school with me, but other forms of John were becoming popular. The English names tended to be replaced by the Welsh versions, Siôn and Iwan, then Ifan, Efan, Ioan and Jac.

Other form of John like Seán and Ian were fashionable.

Yes, that kind of makes sense in some ways. I just think it’s a shame there aren’t so many Johns anymore. I like Jack and many of the different national variations of John - but love the “original” too!

If both Henry and Harry, Theodore and Theo etc can both be popular at the same time, then we can have more John’s as well as Jack’s!

This is nice. Sounds like Ieuan which I guess is the Welsh version of John.

just looked at DC’s Y11 register and not a single John out of 300 kids. There was a Johny playing in the same age group’s rugby game we watched today though.

KirstenBlest · 24/03/2024 14:50

@namechangefornames , Ieuan is a Welsh form of John, but there are many others. Ioan is more similar to Jowan.

KirstenBlest · 24/03/2024 14:56

as is Iwan.

I love oliver as a name. I know alot of mumsnetters don't like it because it's very common. I don't mind a common name but I'm in West Ireland and it's not a common name at all. I've never met any olivers in my 40 years of life.
I feel like he'd get called ollie Jo or ollie John or something which is awful isn't it? as I know a few men with John and Joe as middle names around here and they always get a double barrel name

My son is Oliver John, after my late father, John. I love it.

beefmassaman · 24/03/2024 19:09

I love it. I wish there were more little John's running around. I'm expecting another boy and wondering if we should lead the way and go with this name.

You mean not old-fashioned like those popular new names like Alfie, Martha, Stanley and Ruby?

No old fashioned in a ‘Derrick, Malcom, roger’ kind of way. But it’s inoffensive, just very dull.

John’s nothing like Derek, Malcolm or Roger! They’re stuck in their time and only in their time (well, Derek and Malcolm are.)

It’s more like Peter, Mark or David: a solid timeless name. I think they’re all classy in a way that ‘interesting’ names can never be.

But it’s all opinion.

Lalupalina · 25/03/2024 11:30

There are still FAR too many middle aged Johns around. Like Steve, Mike or Derek, I find them all dull and overused.

In 15-20 years these names might sound fresh again.

JoanThursday1972 · 25/03/2024 15:23

It's my dad's name. Don't do what my grandma did though and give him the middle name Thomas as he has been embarrassed with that for 60 years.

GuessThatGranny · 26/03/2024 18:58

Due a revival, along with Paul and Peter.

Queenmaker · 26/03/2024 19:00

Yay. And will be very unusual by the time any baby grows up.
My brother is Jonathan, known as Jon and gets compliments a lot on his name. Classic, works at all ages, stages, generations.

Sage7 · 26/03/2024 19:03

Jonnie or Jonno , cute and nice on a grown man

takemeawayagain · 26/03/2024 19:15

I prefer Jonathan/Jon. A bit less dated than John I think.

TTPD · 26/03/2024 19:20

Love it. We would have called one of our DDs John had either been a boy.

JoeLovesGina · 26/03/2024 21:23

My favourite boys' name! It's a yay from me.

Strawberryicecream88 · 16/06/2024 07:57

Love it! Fantastic name! Give me a name like John any day over silly Arlo or Teddy.

RenaissanceBaby · 16/06/2024 08:02

Please use it! John is a fabulous name - solid, classic and completely forgotten about in a modern world full of Arlos, Teddys, Archies, Alfies and Jaxons. Be a John! (light-hearted!)

DillDanding · 16/06/2024 08:05

I love it, but only because we have a ver dear friend named John (57). Not sure I can imagine giving a baby this name.

RuthW · 16/06/2024 09:33

Lovely. Jonathan even better.

user1492757084 · 16/06/2024 12:20

John is manly, well known and with much history.
I like that it is not over used right now.
John is best version to me.

John - Jock, Jonty, Johnny, Jack, Johno
Jonathon - Jon, Jonny, Jonno
Jonathan - Jon, Jonny, Nathan,
