My 8yo is John, he was named after my FIL. We always call him Johnny but maybe he will go by John when he’s older.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 22/03/2024 16:17

TBH, when I read on here that a name is dull it immediately goes onto my ‘possibles’ list. It tends to mean that it’s passed the “would anyone scoff at it, think it’s pretentious or misspell it?” test. MN approved ‘fun’ names are inevitably laughable.

I like John. Totally classic and versatile.

TenThousandSpoons · 22/03/2024 16:19

Love it.
Great middle name if you don’t want it for first name but still want to honour your dad.

I think it was very rude of your friend to say that.

therealcookiemonster · 22/03/2024 16:20

lovely name. so nice to finally see someone here not wanting to name there baby chandelier or prada

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2024 16:24

It seems solid and unfussy compared with many of the trendy names.

Dontdeclutterthemagic · 22/03/2024 16:24

I love it, so classic. It was FILs name and is DS middle name.

FIL died v close to DSs birth and it would have been too raw for DH to use as a first name otherwise we would seriously have considered it.

OffToBedforshire · 22/03/2024 16:27

Clearly not many Elis and John Show fans on here. It's a great name - mainly because of John Robins ❤️

Nicebloomers · 22/03/2024 16:30

Massively underused and totally ready for a revival. A fine, solid name.

ruby1957 · 22/03/2024 16:30

Classic name that has many variants in other langauages and European cultures.

My son who is 50 is called John and he has never been ridiculed for the name - maybe it was popular when he was young.
His second name is David so his young nickname was John D.

RebelWithCause · 22/03/2024 16:35

One of mine is a John (still a teenager). He’s never met another of his generation. Weirdly some people think his ‘real’ name is Jonathan 🙄.It isn’t ( and we’re not Jonathan fans either).

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/03/2024 16:38

I prefer the Scottish version- Iain.

HullaBallu · 22/03/2024 16:38

I really like it: it's simple, timeless, classless, and will let his own personality take centre stage as he grows up, rather than some batshit unusual name.

KayEmAy · 22/03/2024 16:39

Perfectly fine.

Ladyj84 · 22/03/2024 16:39

Well I know several Jonathan's all called Jonathan and all nice guys sadly the John reminds me of bad exes so I don't like it lol

DeZerbisWinnerWinnerPastaDinner · 22/03/2024 16:39

How about a derivative of John if you're not sure? Evan or Ivan for example.

FacingTheWall · 22/03/2024 16:44

My ds 19 is John. He’s not met another one amongst his peers.

sausagepastapot · 22/03/2024 16:45

no

bubballoo · 22/03/2024 16:46

Jonathan and call him Nate. Honour your dad, but also a bit more modern name.

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2024 16:51

Defeats the object IMO, but there are a lot of them to choose from.
They tend to go out of fashion after a while.

Jonathan and call him Nate. Honour your dad, but also a bit more modern name.
It's not honouring someone if it's a different name.

SwedishEdith · 22/03/2024 16:57

Loads of Johns in my family. I love it. Think my dad was known as Johnny when he was younger. Not keen on Jonathan though. Don't consider them to be linked names.

Telomeres · 22/03/2024 17:13

I love Jonathan, and Jon.

Lalupalina · 22/03/2024 17:14

I work in the US a lot and John is what they all call the toilet.

Really ? 🚽

Telomeres · 22/03/2024 17:15

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/03/2024 16:38

I prefer the Scottish version- Iain.

I'm Scottish and don't think I know an Iain younger than about age 45. Don't name him Iain!

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2024 17:16

Jonathan seems middle aged to me. I don't think it naturally shortens to Nate.

I know an Iain who is younger than 45 but he's not Scottish. Ian seems very dated.

penjil · 22/03/2024 17:56

yellowrosee · 22/03/2024 15:17

Love it. Can be Jonathon, John or Johnny ... versatile, timeless and classy

Or even Jonathan 🙄
