Hi,

Expecting our first baby girl. We love the name Tia but DH is worried it's not "very classy".

Our surname is Swan so a little worried Tia Swan is a bit short?

What are your thoughts on Tia, what do you associate the name with?

T(hanks) I(n) A(dvance)
but I do like it as a short name.

TuliLily · 14/03/2024 12:16

Love Tia but hate that it’s now thanks in advance and used loads of the internet so that would put me off.

fiskalita · 14/03/2024 12:31

So it's not a 'classy' name but equally I don't think you should worry about it. If you want a get out clause you could use a classic name and nick name Tia? Like Theresa or Matilda or Tabitha?

TheOriginalEmu · 14/03/2024 12:38

My daughters best friend is Tia and so I have lots of good associations with it.
Maybe Thea (pronounced Tay-uh or Thee-uh) would be a similar but more ‘classy’ vibe?
Swan will go with most names anyway imo, because it has a long vowel and so doesn’t have that abruptness that can happen with 2 short syllable names like Jack John might for instance, Jack Swan flows nicely. And Tia is two syllables even though it’s a short word so it’s fine.

marshmallowfinder · 14/03/2024 12:39

Not keen on it. What about the lovely Welsh name, Nia?

Moreteaandchocolate · 14/03/2024 13:13

Tia is pretty, and I love how short, simple and underused it is. It sounds great with Swan. I agree with the pp comments about Thanks in advance. Also could be mixed up with Thea (when said Taya).

Personally I prefer -

Thea - said thee-a or Tay-a
Nia
Mia
Leah
Fia (possibly short for Sofia)

DuchessOfSausage · 14/03/2024 13:14

Tia Maria - Aunty Mary in Spanish

It's the kind of name which might invite assumptions about social class etc, but so what? If you and your DH love it, it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Not that it really matters (to me anyway to DH it might). Which social class would associate it with.
The only Tia I've ever met is very middle class, grammar school, tennis playing type, but DH can be a bit of a snob and doesn't associate it with that social group!

I would assume working class, personally. I hasten to add that I'm not saying that's a negative at all. Simply that a lot of people might unconsciously make that assumption.

LipstickLil · 14/03/2024 13:31

Well, your DH is right - it's not very classy. It also means aunt, which is a bit weird for a name IMO.

SkaneTos · 14/03/2024 14:35

I think Tia is a cute name!

Makes me think of the American actress Tia Mowry (in "Sister, Sister").

Good ole mumsnet obsessed with the working class

if you like the name use it

Ilovegoldies · 14/03/2024 16:55

I can't get over 'Aunty' I'm a ',Tia' to my Spanish niece and nephews. Its a no from me for that reason.

I agree, if you like the name, use it.

The OP asked a question, I answered it.

Bobskeleton · 14/03/2024 16:58

Friend had a Tia, was a surprise when I heard it, for some reason felt a bit 90s. But I instantly liked it and think it is a lovely name.

Selkiee · 14/03/2024 16:59

I LOVE Tia.

The only one I know was a middle class Head Girl who was good at everything.

Er, OP's husband raised the issue!

SowhoamI505 · 14/03/2024 17:57

I am one and would say go for it but maybe add a longer middle name to balance out the whole name, for example: Tia Georgette Swan

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 14/03/2024 18:06

I knew of one and she got a lot of Tia Maria comments. Thea is almost the same pronunciation depending on your accent. It's also Danish and therefore socially acceptable to the middle classes 😉

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/03/2024 18:07

It's Spanish for Aunty.

Ezia · 14/03/2024 18:08

What is everyone's opinion of Lia/Lea? (Don't like the Leah spelling).

OP posts:
SallyWD · 14/03/2024 18:10

It's not to my taste but I've heard far worse. In Spain, Portugal, maybe Italy, Tia is the word for aunt.

TuliLily · 14/03/2024 18:12

Not keen on Lia/ Lea and I would pronounce Lea as Lee like dairylea
