Tia?

Hi,

Expecting our first baby girl. We love the name Tia but DH is worried it's not "very classy".

Our surname is Swan so a little worried Tia Swan is a bit short?

What are your thoughts on Tia, what do you associate the name with?

What is everyone's opinion of Lia/Lea? (Don't like the Leah spelling).

I prefer Tia to Lea/Lia

and Leia (lay-a) to Lea/Lia

How about Talia?

Pemba · 14/03/2024 18:19

Lea is nice but some may pronounce it as Lay-a.

Mia is nice, I much prefer it to Tia, the only thing is that it's very popular.

I wouldn't really go for Tia, because of the Spanish for aunt thing, also isn't there a drink, Tia Maria?

Mind you, Poppy is the word for 'Grandpa/Grandad' for a lot of Americans, but that doesn't stop Brits using it for their daughters, it remains popular. I suppose people are only associating it with the flower.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 14/03/2024 18:24

I like Tia. It's straightforward and easy to spell and there's no ambiguity about the pronunciation.

Please think carefully about any names where you have to choose how it is pronounced. Your child will spend ages correcting people.

Cleaningupthemess · 14/03/2024 18:31

Not keen on Tia for the reasons already mentioned
i like Lia/Lea but think it will be mispronounced as Lee, Liar.

Other thoughts are
Thea
Tara
zara
Noa
Lara

Fomp · 14/03/2024 18:39

My daughters name is Lia and she gets lots of compliments. We are Welsh and in Welsh Leah is pronounced like Leia. Lia is pronounced to rhyme with Nia/Tia etc. no one has ever pronounced it wrong although people do sometimes spell it wrong. I love her name, I think it’s really pretty

DuchessOfSausage · 14/03/2024 19:21

Unfortunately Nia gets mispronounced as Nye-uh sometimes. Lia would sound like Liar.
Nice name though and works in Welsh.

DuchessOfSausage · 14/03/2024 20:14

Lia/Lea?
I know a Lea (Lee) and someone with the surname Lea (Lee)

You could have Pia or Zia, but Pia shortens to Pee, and Zia is Italian for aunt

DuchessOfSausage · 14/03/2024 20:16

@Fomp , does Lia have a slightly older brother with a 3-letter name?

Ketzele · 14/03/2024 20:19

I like it, and what's wrong with a 'working class' name?

An alternative would be Talia, Tia for short.

DuchessOfSausage · 14/03/2024 20:21

Or Athena

Likemyjealouseel · 14/03/2024 20:23

For me the association with aunts would be too strong.
Lia, Gia, Fiadh, Pia are all nice.

Mintearo7 · 14/03/2024 20:28

Tia has quite a few (not necessarily negative) connotations. Lia is okay. Lara was on our list. That would go well with Swan. Gia is also becoming a bit more popular but again could be mispronounced.

lavenderjump · 14/03/2024 20:41

Prefer Tia over Lia. If I heard Lia I would assume it's spelt Leah.

Only ever known one Tia who is in her 40's. Not sure it will make a comeback but it's quite simple and fairly sweet.

Met a lovely little girl called Cia the other day and I thought it sounded lovely.

sciencemama · 14/03/2024 21:00

Beautiful. Paired with a middle name or double-barrel first name would be nice as long as it isn't Marie or Maria

Clearinguptheclutter · 14/03/2024 21:04

I’m with your dh
There used to be a drink. Tia Maria.
also the ‘aunt’ thing

Lia is better as is Lea (lay-a)

not Mia. So many of them round here.

Ah Lara Swan. That’s good.

SabreIsMyFave · 14/03/2024 21:07

Yep, Tia definitely screams 'Thanks In Advance' like you see on the internet.

Not a fan sorry @Ezia

alexdgr8 · 14/03/2024 21:09

your husband is right.
it's not a proper name.

Pieceofpurplesky · 14/03/2024 21:17

Tia is lovely - I am not a fan of Lia. Nia Swan sounds great though.

MillyMollyMandy01 · 14/03/2024 21:22

It sounds a bit old fashioned or as if it’s Shortened from a longer name.
How about Martina or Tiana which you could shorten to Tia for a nickname, if you really like it.
Or Tessa is similar but might make your DH happier?!

ladygindiva · 14/03/2024 21:29

I prefer the Teah spelling.

Fomp · 14/03/2024 21:41

DuchessOfSausage · 14/03/2024 20:16

@Fomp , does Lia have a slightly older brother with a 3-letter name?

No, she does have an older brother but he has more letters in his name

BoleynMemories13 · 15/03/2024 06:45

I don't mind Tia. I makes a nice change these days as it's not ine you hear a lot anymore.

It's definitely not a 'posh' name but I wouldn't describe it as 'working class'. It's a proper name and spelt correctly. If you were going for Teeyah for example I might be giving a different response.

If you are concerned though, Thea is a nice alternative. I don't mind Lia but much prefer the classic Leah. Definitely not Lea, I think many would pronounce that as 'Lee'.

Nia Swan sounds too much like 'Near a Swan' to my ears! Mia Swan is nice though.

Overall, I would go for Tia if it's the name you love. Whilst the name is short on paper, it's 2 syllables so sounds fine with your 1 syllable surname.

MJ13 · 15/03/2024 08:06

Tia is the Spanish word for aunt so I would never use it. I also think there’s prettier ‘ia’ names. I dislike the harsh T in it. How about Gia, Mia, or Thea?

Mamoun · 15/03/2024 08:08

Tia isn't classy indeed
