Barnaby, Leo, or...

Hello there,

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the names Barnaby or Leo? I like Barnaby/Barney but not sure I love it, and worried about the popularity of Leo. I also quite like Felix but it does make me think cat.

I already have a boy with a fairly common 'ie' ending name, but he was pretty much always going to be called that name, and a daughter with a flower name but not an ie/y ending.

Other names I like but can't use for various reasons:
Sebastian
Freddie
Theo
Tobias

Any thoughts or other suggestions?

I like Leo a lot. Felix is lovely but the cat thing would also put me off. I don’t like Barnaby/Barney. I really like Sebastian and Theo from your list that you can’t use.

One of my favourite names is Zachary/Zach/Zac so I’d be trying to convince your husband if I was you. 😂

I like both, but Leo swings it by being a name that works internationally, suits any age and doesn't have a short form.

AmaryllisChorus · 10/03/2024 12:37

Leo is a great name.

Less keen on Barnaby/Barney.

How about:
Rafael
Izaak/Isaac
Ezra
Gabriel
Jonah
Hugo

There are way more Barneys than Leos at my kids' schools!

Leo is lovely. I've never got over the Flintstones/purple dinosaur/synonym for fight with Barney.

BathQueen12 · 10/03/2024 12:42

I prefer Leo. I think we have pretty similar taste in names, Tobias and Sebastian were on my shortlist. Others were Isaac, Arthur (nn Artie), Fraser, Oscar, Jacob and Rupert.

DrLucyVanPelt · 10/03/2024 12:44

I like Leo more. Suits all ages and feels classic but also modern.

Barney always makes me think of The Flintstones.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 10/03/2024 12:47

Leo is a classic

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 10/03/2024 12:47

Elliott

Clearinguptheclutter · 10/03/2024 12:48

I’ve got a Leo. I love it but I wouldn’t have chosen it if I knew how popular it would become. Mine is slightly older than the very many other Leos round here (north).

I also liked Elliott, Cameron, Fraser, Rowan, Jonah, Arlo

Peppermint81 · 10/03/2024 12:54

Felix. Lovely name, kids friend is called that and honestly never think of a cat. Felix is him!

Barney/Barnaby I don't like, and Leo is ok. Felix hands down winner for me

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/03/2024 14:04

I love Leo!

Other ideas -

Eli
Isaac
Milo
Max
Rory
Euan
Owen
Evan
Oscar
Finlay

Thanks all. Nice to see lots of love for Leo; I think that's the front runner at the moment. He'll almost definitely be an august baby too (so plenty of time to decide!) which would be nice for a Leo. I also like that it's international. I hadn't really thought of the Barney purple dinosaur link 😂 I don't know if bothers me. Felix is still up for consideration.

We also like Jasper but it's too similar to my daughter's name. If she'd been a boy she'd have been Reuben but I'm less keen on that now.
I like Rowan but it's one of my friend's son's names who I see all the time. Sebastian would have been top choice I think but I used it for my other son's middle name already.

Also like: Eli, Arlo (not sure if it might date though?), Oscar (but I'm a teacher and teach three of them in my class already!) and Ezra.
Husband likes names like Hugo, Rupert that I'm not too keen on.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Middle name for this one will probably be Michael.

If this was a girl she'd have been Alexandra (Ally), Matilda, Summer or Gabriella. If that gives any further indication of my taste. I find girls names a lot easier tbh!
