How would you pronounce Violet. I say Vi O Let but have lots of friends saying Vi Let

Agreed. I've never heard anyone say Vi O Let.

I think they mean the ‘o’ is a schwa. As someone else said, like ‘violence’.

RuthW · 03/03/2024 21:40

Vi-lut

overthestorms · 03/03/2024 21:44

Vi-let (Scottish)

Riverlee · 03/03/2024 21:44

Vi - O -lit

Vye-o-let.
It's the only way.

It demonstrably isn't the only way, as a glance at the thread will tell you. Grin

I say vigh(uh)luht, like violence as someone else said. Never heard a pronunciation with the O stressed.

Vi - O -lit

Seriously?!

Vi O lit?!

O as in Oh? and with an emphasis on the middle syllable?!

I have never heard that pronunciation...it seems very odd!

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 03/03/2024 22:14

I pronounce it Vi Let (could be a regional thing?) I'm West Midlands

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 03/03/2024 22:15

Sorry just said it a few times to myself and I say it more like Vi luht

kitsuneghost · 03/03/2024 22:16

Vi lit

Papillon23 · 03/03/2024 22:18

Like violent but without the t. Generally does just have 3 syllables but only just. Could drop down to 2 depending on the day. Definitely an "uh" sound that doesn't require you to move your mouth or your tongue, not an O sound.

Um .. maybe I’ve written it wrong but I pronounce it the same as you! 🫤

I know, but you've said it's the only way, when it clearly isn't.

murasaki · 03/03/2024 22:31

Vire lut, I think. But now I'm saying it out loud and questioning myself.

WeightoftheWorld · 03/03/2024 22:34

VI-let

MadisonAvenue · 03/03/2024 22:36

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 03/03/2024 18:50

Vi-lut in my midlands accent

Same here

IdaPrentice · 03/03/2024 22:37

The same as the colour and the flower. I'm pretty sure the name comes from the flower. Like Lily or Rose. This is how it's pronounced. Click on the little speaker icon to hear it.

Clearly it’s the same as the flower and colour but that doesn’t answer how people pronounce the word!

in my accent it’s something like Vie-uh-lth 😆

Onelife2024 · 03/03/2024 22:44

Vire-lut (vire said like fire)

CrushingOnRubies · 03/03/2024 22:48

Via-let
I think .

Em308 · 03/03/2024 22:53

My Aunty Violet was Vi-let rhyming with pilot.

HanaJane · 03/03/2024 23:05

Vi oh let but i think it depends on your accent, I've heard a lot of people say it like Vi let too

PickledScrump · 03/03/2024 23:11

Vi oh let, but a soft oh sound, like violin

FluffyToesMeow · 03/03/2024 23:24

Yes this

Snugglemonkey · 04/03/2024 00:09

God, reading this makes mec100% certain I could never have a Violet. Despite it being a beautiful name.

Vi lert? Wtf?!
