Family name change?

Looking for advice here.. hope that's ok!

Does anyone have experience of changing their surname? I am very strongly considering changing mine and my daughter's surname to a blended surname of mine and my husband's. For context, we are already married and I took his name (it's not actually on any official document though so not quite sure how it all works where I decided what name I officially take - I've not changed it anywhere other than with my doctor and potentially with DVLA.. she says, scratching her chin!) Professionally I keep my family name.

We aren't in contact with DH's family and I feel almost uncomfortable with the surname now, being completely honest. I would've double barrelled our names from the start but they are horrific together 🤣 DH is open to change but may keep his for him and just me and DD change our surnames but this is something we are chatting about still.

I was going to ask if anyone's had experience of changing surnames to a blended one and how it was/how difficult it makes things going forward etc etc? Much appreciated!

@justthethreeofusx
I think you and your daughter should have a surname you feel comfortable with. So if you want to change it, then you should change it.

I don't have any advice about changing a surname to a blended surname in the UK (I am not from the UK).
I hope people here on the board can give you advice, they are very knowledgeable about names!

Good luck!

you haven’t actually taken his name if you haven’t taken the steps to change it officially. Ie passport, driving licence, banking…….

to change your name to anything other than your birth name or your husband’s name you would need to deed poll, and then make that official as above.

Why do that at all, if they are horrific together?
Would your DD like an horrific joint surname?

Sounds like changing to your surname would be better all round, OP.

DC changed theirs as soon as they were old enough. Their dad wouldn't give his consent, so they had to wait. I changed mine to match when DC did.

We printed off a free deed poll online. Got them witnessed and have a couple of copies each. Took them into the bank etc. No where hasn't accepted them so far.

@imnotwhoyouthinkiam can I ask, what age was this legally possible?
