Baby Boy name help

Hi
I’m desperately looking for inspiration for a name for our little boy, imminently due in March.

He has an older sibling - Lyra - and surname is relatively common beginning with S.

Our potential list includes:
Kit
Lucas
Finn
Seb

But nothing we are totally in love with yet. Trying to find that sweet spot of not too out there, not too common. I feel like it’s easier with girls names! Open to all suggestions for the magic name that I haven’t discovered yet!

There’s a little boy in my son’s class called Fergus, which I thought was lovely.

Seb/Sebastian Smith is too many Ss
Lucas Smith sounds like Luca Smith. Lucas and Lyra a bit too matchy.
Kit and Finn don't sound great with Smith, but that might not be your surname.

Onelife2024 · 29/02/2024 18:57

I really like all your boys names, particularly Seb and Lucas - but as a pp said, they might not be the best matches with your surname? Finn is nice too, and I also like Kit if short for Christopher.

I know a Lyra with a brother called Raffy (Rafael), which is a nice combo?

How many syllables in your surname? Because shorter names don’t always work well with short one syllable surnames e.g. Seb Smith and Finn Smith are quite abrupt but Seb Stevens and Finn Stevens sound a lot better.
I think Seb needs to be a nickname for Sebastian.
Max/ Maxwell
Toby
Elliot
Jacob
Oscar

My favourite boys names at the moment are Flynn and Jasper

It depends a lot on the surname. I had a quick look for S surnames and got:
Saunders
Scott
Shaw
Simpson
Smith
Spencer
Stevens
Stewart

Some are S-heavy and tongue-twisting with Sebastian. Kit/Finn Shaw/Scott are a bit abrupt-sounding

All your choices are lovely. Kit is awesome - a real head turner for me. Never taught one! Harris is a name I could have chosen for one of my boys.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/02/2024 20:17

Evren

wellingtonsandwaffles · 29/02/2024 20:26

Your name vibe is short and cool, but not too “out there”. Like your choices but if you want more, how about :

Elis
Jed (Josiah)
Jude
Miles

agree that ideally you’d have a two syllable + first name if your surname is one syllable though!

EnterNowhere · 29/02/2024 21:09

I like your name picks, but I’m not keen on the flow of Lucas with an S surname.

How about

Lyra & Hugo
Lyra & Jude
Lyra & Oscar
Lyra & Tate
Lyra & Rowan

Noel?

Lyra and Noel.

Noel Simpson.
Noel Strachan.
Noel Smith.

He will always be the only one with that name but it’s not weird and people will know how to say it and spell it.

Lyra and ..
Tim
Thomas
Rohan
Robert
Duncan

Lalupalina · 02/03/2024 07:29

How about Quinn instead of Finn?

Lyra & Quinn sound great

I'd avoid Seb with an S surname and Lucas runs into the S

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/03/2024 07:35

Lyra and Oscar, Rex, Otis. Coleby. Jude. Duke Alex.

User6761 · 03/03/2024 16:14

Lyra and Flynn
Lyra and Ivo
Lyra and Nicolas (Nico)
Lyra and Euan
Lyra and Cass

elysiann · 03/03/2024 18:24

Thanks for everyone’s suggestions - some new ones to add to the list, and a couple I hadn’t seen before, when I thought I’d read every boys name under the sun!

It is a two syllable surname, as that does make a difference. I agree Seb and Lucas are out because it doesn’t quite sound right.
